M60A0 in Dillon Montana
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This is a picture of the M60A0 in front of the Readiness Center at 1070 Hwy 41N in Dillon, Montana. This vehicle has 24 stamped onto the front right towing lug, and 011 stamped into the left front lug. Does anyone know if serial numbers were ever split like this? Does this mean the serial number of this tank is 24011? Left and right are as if I was sitting in the driver's seat.

What is on the left rear side of the engine deck? The serial is usually repeated there. Also look on the front glacias plate around bothe headlights. Ther are often stamped numbers there. Near the Left headlight the Registration number is often stamped in. It may begin 9B (but it may be something else :-)). The serial is sometimes near the right headlight. Sometimes you can see the painted registration number on the side box below the turret under some of the paint.

And you have the perspective correct. left and right should be given from the drivers position

Sorry, I forgot to include in my first post that this vehicle has 9B4143 stamped into the glacis. I could not see any stampings in the engine deck. Any info on this vehicle would be appreciated as the staff at the center would like to put up a sign in front of the tank. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Alf,
Very nice looking M60 you have there. What kind of information are you seeking on this tank? From the picture I can tell you she was used for a long time before being retired. She has the newer armored air cleaner boxes and T-142 track. About your serial number, I believe if you were to sand the lug a bit you might find either 1011 or 2011. I'm betting 1011 based on the registration number. The deck/hull numbers are the hardest to find on these old M60A0's. They are there but are ususally filled with years of paint.

The Center staff were vague about what they wanted to put on the sign in front of the tank. I guess, anything that can be found out, starting with when and where it was produced. Unfortunately I cannot revisit it with sandpaper anytime soon, as I stopped to photograph it when I was passing by on holiday. I had Neil's AFV Register with me so I knew it was there, and when I stopped in to the Center to ask permission to take photos they were very interested and asked me to forward any info I found on it. Attached is another shot of it.
I managed to visit quite a few other AFVs on this holiday, looking for serial numbers and will put photos up of them shortly.

When the Army puts a tank or APC at an Army Reserve or National Guard center does the local unit get anykind of paperwork? I would think there would be some kind of 'custody document' which I would expect to have at least the serial number and/or registration number.

There should be documentation, to include a 'hand reciept' which would have the SN & RN.

Especially if cataloged with CMH.
