You see it hit the ground just in front of him before it strikes him (at :20 seconds)...so it hit twice before it hit him. Lucky sod.

In the full size of my night shot in VN, you can see the wobble imparted to a round that struck the ground from an M2 from the lower frame of this shot...it's hard to make out in the downsizing I had to do for the posting, but on my original, it's clear.

Considering a .50 cal weighs ~700 grains, had it caught him square in the noggin, he'd still likely be dead. Lucky SOB, for sure.
