M47 at Camp Murray, WA
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M47 at Camp Murray, WA

During a recent holiday in th NW, I visited Camp Murray, Washington. Here are some photos of the M47 on display at the gate. It has the number 8211 clearly visible stamped into the front left towing lug. I hope this is the serial number as it was the only stamping visible. I also had a good look at the M3 Stuart and took pictures, but I can't seem to get this program to attach more than 3 pictures, so I'll put the M3 shots up separately later.

Not a bad looking M47, I especially like the display mounting. Ft Irwin had serial numbers 1560, 1022, and 403 on display, (403 was in Barstow). These all had the serial number stamped into the front tow lug, so you should be correct. There were 8,576 M47's built, (5481 at Detroit Tank Arsenal and 3095 at American Locomotive). M47's were the last tank to utilize a 5 man crew and they cost $129,000 to produce back in June 1951 when production started. M47's served with Italian forces from 1954 thru 1989, 35years! Spain re-built 22 M47's into M47ER3's from 1993-1996 and are in service today, ( I believe).

Was this any of those, Jeff?

Real nice display Alf,
Usually you would see a tank facing the opposite way on those kind of ramps. Makes you wonder if it was deliberate or just a mistake by the folks who pulled her up. I like it!! Sorta looks like a scene from the "Battle of the Bulge" movie from decades ago. (Not really good but great M47 and M24 footage). Gives the public a good view of the top to a certain degree.

That M47 isn't in too bad of shape. Judging by the rain gutters on the turret it's another MAP return. BTW, where in Washington is Camp Murray? Is it near Ft. Lewis?

Duh! I should've figured that out when you mentioned the M3 Stuart. Thanks!
