Ssssh! its about the CIA.
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Yes,

that certainly looks very nice, thank you Jeff!!

Just two or three things, if I may:

- background should really be OD instead of the bright green, bronze green would also be an option, and maybe the tanks in a dark battleship gray or silver

- instead of that Sherman you snuck in I was aiming at a T-54/55, seeing it was the export bestseller of the evil empire and would cover a lot of African, European, Near, Middle as well as Far Eastern and South American nations

- using the armor triangle was supposed to be the big nod to our American brethren, while I was looking for something more generic than the US branch insignia, hence the artillery piece... I suppose a flaming grenade would also be a nice alternative, crossed rifles and sabers were pretty universal at one time or another, so we could look for a more generic design if necessary

I like the way you arranged the motto at the bottom, the staggered design was just due to the doodling, I didn't know how the words would fit and was looking for a neutral solution, but this looks excellent.

Ahh, it's nice to see my design turned into this... *sniff*

My basic idea is that, once we agree on a design, we'll have it in some standard sizes (calling card, hat, T-shirt breast + chest) and available for download in standard formats, so that members can have them made in their own neighbourhood at a T-shirt or trophy shop of their own choosing, rather than bother with ordering a large batch and distributing it internationally- plus you can choose if you want a T-shirt, Golf shirt, baseball cap, etc.

Just imagine, we'd recognize each other instantly at all kinds of events, we alone know there's a "CIA" hidden in there and of course, we'd be babe magnets. Mr. Green

I think most of jens ideas are spot on. Personally I was thinking the latin would run along the sides of the triangle. I was thinking a plain three colored triangle without overlayed branch insignia. (Although the flaming bomb with it's Ordnance Corps connotations would be nice at Aberdeen :-))

I actually like the tank portrayed on the Soviet hat flash earlier in this thread. (I didn't see the M-41 influence. At first I saw a Tiger II turret and a KV/JS suspension, over all a good stylised generic tank)

I think Bronze Green would be a good background. maybe with an optional Desert Tan with Black lettering for those with a Desert Rat leaning

For the tanks on the badge, how about one representing the earliest tank (Little willy?) and the latest?


As a matter of fact I was thinking about it, but the rhomboids are more universally recognizable and had numerous users: GB, US, Imperial Germany, Rooshia- goes well with the international theme, dontcha think?


Ah, I see. If not the rhomboid (for some reason), might I suggest the FT-17 as an alternative?

That would work as well, it's also a nod to the first "conventional design" with the basic layout as we know it today, I just thought the rhomboid would be a nice salute to the grand-daddy of "mass"-produced tanks and a good counterpoint to the modern Leopard.

I originally did intend it without the branch insignia, then I remembered that, although the roots are often the same internationally, the colours are not- only red seems to be an universal colour for artillery, but armour e.g. is rose pink in the German army and, IIRC, black in the Rodina, infantry is/was white and/or green in the German army and green in a lot of other nations, etc.

what if we remove the branch insignia and put a somewhat larger FT-17 at the intersection of the triangle colors,
latin could be placed around the triangle if preferred.

An FT-17 at the intersection would be kinda nice, I guess, but wouldn't explain the origin of the colours- we'll see where the discussion ends on this, I guess.

Why is everybody implying that I suppose nationalist motives in regards to the Sherman? Nothing could be further removed from the truth, rest assured- and I do like the M4, as my stash, library and harddrive will attest. I just thought it only fitting that a "Communist" icon would be included, seeing as it is flanked by two Western icons- on second thought, we could use a T-34, that way we cover both World Wars and the modern era... Cool

As regards the Latin, I prefer it where it is now, easy to read and fills an otherwise empty space, but I guess it's a matter of personal taste and will await the consensus.

And don't worry, I have a hunch you'll be roughing- thanks for your valiant effort so far, really looks good.

I like the idea of the FT-17 over the triangle. I understand the 'blank space' issue also. Would it be better to move the Rhomboid T-34 modern images down there? Remember as a hat or golf shirt logo it will be maybe 3/4 the size of the image I see on my screen right now. Those tanks will be pretty crowded where they are. On a card they will be downright tiny.

The choice of which vehicles to use is tough. Given that we have a large American symbol already I think using the T-34 as the 'middle era' tank would be appropriate. As far as the Modern one I think at this scale they will all pretty much look alike Confused

Still in beta but pop along and join in!

and yeah I started a CIA community and looking to start others... Lingle, Gavin <ducks> nah joking about the M113 as there are many good web sites. Just specialising in communities about the odd vehicles that have no real websites or forums.
