AOBC 1-88
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

My introduction to Armor Officer Course began in October 87. Here I am with my roommates. New Jersey, Mississippi, and me, the Crazy Cajun!

My first big bullet just went downrange!

Us newbie LT's were pretty rough on equipment. This was a pretty common sight! Laughing

Resting after a hard day of tanking. Bumper sticker says it all Twisted Evil !

Final field exercizes. Being the well educated LT's were where, we decided mud would enhance our camo...

Camo job complete!

But we forgot, we have to wash these tanks afterward. 30 hours at the wash rack. Learned a very valuable lesson! Mr. Green Mr. Green

You started AOB right after me. I was 14-87 (or was it 13-87). We graduated the day before Thanksgiving in Nov 87. Our 10 day war was during the frozen stretch in late Nov.

Hey Sabot, you guys were still there while we were just getting started. Do you remember a guy by the last name of "Lightfoot" in your class? Our 10 day war was in mid February, 1988. January was 32 or below almost the whole month. This Cajun was not a happy camper! Crying or Very sad

Oh man, it makes me feel old. Razz I was in AOB 20-78 - last class of FY78. Our 10-Day War was in Jan. '79 - the only day where the high was above freezing was Day 1, when it snowed about 8 inches. We learned a LOT about winter tank driving and maintenance - very valuable lessons for life in Germany later on. How to break loose frozen support rollers ... how to drive in reverse up an icy hill when it just wouldn't go up in forward ... how to stop a tank from sliding backwards down same icy hill (luck!) ... how to keep from freezing your torso and face off when driving or TC'ing (NBC hose on hot, stuffed up field jacket). (This was in M60A1s, BTW)

The name does not ring a bell. My AOB class started 27 July 87 (just hit my 20 yr active duty two weeks ago) and ended in late Nov 87, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving of 87.

Three members of the Mississippi National Guard gave me my nickname of "Sabot". They joked that I was as short as a little 105mm sabot round.

Basic training Sept 1982 and still in after 10 years in the Ohio Nat Guard and 15 years, (next month) active duty. Five more years to 30 combined and then it's retirement for me!!!! Twentyfour years Infantry and the rest as Transportation / CORP level. I'm always the "oldman" everywhere I'm at.
