25 Aug Activities & SNs for the interested
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Don, thanks for the info!

Uh... Dumb question, arent there five M60A1s in storage at Richardson? Or at least I have five M60A1s with different RNs that were in the museum's collection according to the old inventory. One of them used to be at the AWTS building before it was torn down...

The RNs I have for M60A1s presumably in storage are: RN 09B8957, RN 09B04668, RN JJ00ZW, RN JJ010G, RN JJJ03QD (SN 836 - was at AWTS). Of the first four, one has SN 4284... and presumably another 867???

That's a real odd M48A5 SN - off the tow lug?

I already have SN 2891-C for the M20 from Joe DeMarco...

The T-72, is that a V or a ?? Since I have now seen Bs on Russian SNs I think I will use the original ? if that is what is there...

There has been some shuttling of vehicles which has occurred and this may be the root of confusion. The M60A1 was in the 'gravel storage lot' not previously there on my last visit.

This is the operational M48A5 that we use on occasion.

The SN is on tow lug and lower back deck. The A 10113 SN was on the removable back deck.

I'll recheck Russian vehicle SN's. I was in a hurry so notes are a bit messy. No SN on one of the BMP's or the MTLC. They have been removed. (welded over).

My records say that M48A5 was made from an M60A2 hull - which doesnt seem to make a lot of sense to me...

Also, next time you are in the LST Building, check the lower front hull of the Staghound - see my picture in the Saumur thread.

Thanks!

Neil - Why do you say that is an odd serial for an M48A5? Do we have very many examples of M48A5s? I figured that Anniston reserialized them when they converted them, similar to the new serial numbers on Anniston modified M60s. Just in this case the A is in the lead position. I think the leading 10 after the A might be some kind of starting offset (I don't think they did 10000 M48A5s :-))

Generally, any letters in a serial number is a bit unusual... For M48s I have SNs of 923, 518, 1209, 2650, 3535, 3599, 6888. But you are right its not unprecedented... For example, the M48A5 AVLB at Fort Irwin is SN A1B072 - maybe thats how A5s were numbered...

I checked my photos from LST. I thought I had that shot, but 'no Joy'. The SN I found was C 115769. I believe it was stamped on the front upper slope of hull. Not sure, but I'll put that on my ever busier 'Things to get photos of' list, on my next run thru of LST & Richardson M.P.

Perhaps later today to Richardson M.P......

That might still be right, especially if you got it off a data plate. Here's what I found on the Staghound at Saumur

Hi Neil! Fellow CIA Agents and other Folks!

Neil, that's not a case of "doesn't seem to make a lot of sense".
That's a major case of NO WAY. Somebody was pulling your leg with that claim.

It's one thing to put a turret from an M60A2 on a M48 hull. But to convert a M60 hull into a M48 hull is only possible if the M60A2 hull was make out of something a lot softer that cast armor.

There is an M60A2 turret mounted on a M48 hull used up at the Zussman MOUT site here. Unfortunately I have no photos of it. The 5 months my former unit 'owned' the training site, I failed to take a photo of it. I spent a good part of that 5 months , looking down at that damn tank. I manned the 'observer' water tower for the Op Noble Eagle train-up in 2001-2002.

Regards,
Don
