Never go where the yellow flowers grow !!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Here are a few choice stills from an old video tape, I recorded during field time at Ft Polk La in 1990.

I was in C Co 3/70 AR, 2nd Bde, 5th Inf Div. At the time, it was the only Active Duty Division in the ARMY, that was not 'FORCE MODERNIZED'(!!!???)

The Infantry Bns had M113A1's (!!) instead of Bradleys;
The Aviation Bde had AH1 (Cobra)& UH1 (Huey) helicopters from Vietnam issue (!!??);
The Armor Bns had direct re-issued M-1's (NOT factory or depot rebuilds)

During ODS in 1990-1991, 5th ID was given the task of train up for the National Guard of Louisiana for possible depolyment. THAT NEVER HAPPENED.... Nov / Dec 1990 was a fiasco Rolling Eyes . ( Caused a complete shake up of the AGR system).

I saw it all...(...attempt to 'walk-away')

I remember the 5th ID coming to Fort Irwin in the 80's. They still had the goers!

Hey Dontos, wasn't 5th ID considered the "heaviest" mech infantry division in the US due to all the armor battalions, both active duty and the 2 NG units, 1/156 AR LAARNG, and the ?/152 AR ALARNG?

Know all about those yellow flowers. Rumor has it there is an M-60 buried in a mud hole not far from Yellow Barrel Hill.

The above photo sequence is C 21 (I was the 'LT's gunner). It is located in a low ground on the northern edge of the 'Bombing Range' at Peason Ridge, in the vicinty of OP Red (?). We used to fire a tank table 8 & 10 along the high ground, until the MPRC was opened back on main post.

I was scanning (thru the main gun sights) in front of the tank seeing all the little yellow flowers Shocked (during a rather long drought). I attempted to convince the LT of the need of exiting the area. We didn't quite make it....!?

I do know there was 3 Active Duty Bns and then the 'Round-out Bde' which only had the 2 Ar Bns from LAARNG. (as far as I know..)

Don, Tanklord,

Many divisions would claim this or that. 1st Division at Riley could claim the same with 5 tank Battalions in Kansas and Germany, All active, reality was the Unit's in Germany belonged to the Corps in Europe (5th or 7th) while the Division was part of III Corps from Hood. 2 ID in Korea would claim in the early 90's, rightfully, it was the most powerful Division in the Army with all the units it had.

As Gen Herbert J Loyd (ADC-M 2nd ID 1991-92) said. " As Sentries on The borders of Freedoms Frontier, You are members of the largest Division in the U.S. Army. Like the Roman Legions of centuries past, guarding the frontier so that Rome could sleep peacefully, half a world away. ( He was known for his unusal 'inspiring' speeches).

Joe ever hear any of his 'talks'?
