JoeD's Frankenstein (M48A5/M60A2)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Just been looking at some images of the Taiwanese CM11 - detail & angle is not good but judging by the way the towing eye is sticking out some of them appear to have A2 hulls...

Cool

*I go to Taiwan from time-to-time and have been from the North end to the Southern tip. There's a chance I could get a pic if we knew where one of these things was and it's not too sensitive a military area...and the Taiwanese can be pretty sensitive about their military areas. I'd sure give it a shot and I'm not without contacts.

I'm currently interrogating two ROC army guys by email - they can be a tight-lipped but not above dropping hints like 'examine rear of CM11'

Anyone any good at searching the archives on here? A couple of years ago mention was made of a company in Belgium being given a conract to manufacture 152mm rounds for Taiwan. I mislaid my reference article...

Cool

Here is a photo of a similar vehicle that I took in a storage compound of the Patton Museum in 1999. Unfortunately I only took one shot of it, so I have no more details. I asked the staff about it, and was told that it was just a case of the museum having an extra M60A2 turret, with nowhere to put it, and an M48 hull with no turret, so they put them together. Perhaps someone with contacts at the Patton Museum can tell us if this vehicle is still there.

I believe that is a shot of the M60A2/M48 combo that is now at Zussman Range (MOUT site). the tensioner 'pully' is the key.

I have not seen any such combo hulls (besides Zussman Rg tank) with that pulley present.

Great photo, Thanks
Don

"The tensioner pully is the key".

We OLD M-48 tankers know that "pully" would be the track tension idler.

Rolling Eyes

Idler didn't seem right, so made up the pully name.

Comp Idler on 'modern' tanks tends to be in the front and is more easily mistaken as 1st set of roadwheels. Apoligies to the 'OLD -Timers' Mr. Green

It appears to be an M-48A1 hull - looks like it has the triangular-shaped driver's hatch.

Maybe it's just me, but the turret seems to overhang the turret ring more on the 48 hull more than it does on the 60 hull, looks "sloppy". I'm not at home to check the ring diameters, but I'd guess they are different?

Really noticeable in these views:

Funny you should bring that up. I was wondering if the M-60 and M-48 series had the same diameter turret ring?

Well, here's a pic from 3rd AD (I think) Europe for comparison (not one of my own, but illustrates the relationship on the M60 hull). Better fit...

I think the turret rings were the same (85"?) the Pershing retained the 69" from the Sherman The M47 went up to 74 or so and the M48 went up again. I think the M60 was the same as the M48(Hence the plans to reuse M60 turrets on M48 chassis when the turrets were replaced by Starship turrets) But I'll have to check at home

Picture 31 'What are these for?' Searchlight mounts

I think the Left Side Registration number may be real. Funnything is the Right Side one is the same except for thelast digit but appears to be a different application.

Notice the Right rear Fender marking "M48A5'?
I think I see the remains of Left rear Fender marking that have been painted over but I'm not sure

I wonder if the travel lock on the rear deck will work with the 152mm?

Yes, Bob...that's the searchlight mount on the vehicle left side, slaved to the main gun trunnion. (you can see it mounted in the pic I posted)

Could the box on the front have been a hydraulic hookup for a blade or mine roller/plow?
