Munster museum, Germany
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This one was ''new'' since my last vist in apr/may 07. It is located near the entrance and was painted some sort of anti-slip paint.

I had never seen this type of paint.

Very nice, Mijnheer Delsing,

if I had known you were going, I could have given you a pointer on how to obtain permission to climb all over the vehicles- let me know in advance next time.

Ready for some ID and background info? Smile

The Pz 38(t) is not the real thing, it is a replica which was donated by its builder- originals are hard to come by. It does show nicely how close to black the dunkelgrau paint actually was- and I am going to do major damage to anybody who calls it "panzergrey", that is a modeler's myth, the correct translation is dark grey. Evil or Very Mad

The SdKfz 234/4 is not a runner and has a lot of replacement parts, Ft Knox's is the most complete, as Bovington's also has a lot of cosmetic restoration (botched-up, too).

The HS30 mortar carrier is actually a Hotchkiss-built Schützenpanzer kurz, which is shorter and has a different layout (engine up front), the medic APC in the other picture is basically the same vehicle without armament, compare this to the Hispano Suiza-built HS30 with its front-mounted turret.

The SP artillery is a Hummel on the left and a Wespe on the right, the SdKfz 251 with the stubby gun is a SdKfz 251/9, the one with the bridges is a SdKfz 251/7.

The Saracen is privately owned and a full runner, I was present when it was unveiled, test-run and driven inside- and yes, I almost wet my pants with glee, since I've always loved the Saracen and its brethren. Mr. Green

For some reason, the Tampella 120mm mortar has always been referred to as Israeli-built, the first time I heard that was close to 30 years ago- either it is an urban legend that refuses to die or a serious piece of misinformation. Could it be that the Israeli Soltam mortars were patterned after the Tampella product and somebody got his wires crossed?

Was the Hummel and SdKfz 251/7 acquired from the Patton Museum? At one time an earlier Hummel and 251/7 were part of the collection and were returned/traded to Germany.

Hello Jens,
Thanks for the info!! The planning is that we go back to Bergen / Munster in october.

When possible (time) I try to go to the panzermuseum with the tankers who are new in the unit and never visited the museum before.

When possible / permission I'am always interested to climb on the vehicles Mr. Green

Do you know why they closed the part outside with the East German T-55s etc??

Again, thanks for the background info!

Regards,
Lesley

Hoi daar Lesley,

thanks for sharing the pics, the last time I was there spare time was limited and between manning our table at the modeling show and climbing on as well as measuring some of the vehicles, most of the interior exhibits did not get photographed until late in the evening, when the lighting conditions are at their worst- still a great time was had by all and oh boy, what a venue for a show. Mr. Green

The outside exhibit was open when I was there, but since they are in the process of erecting further buildings (construction is planned for the winter break), they might have closed it in preparation. Another possibility is that there was something happening in the barracks directly bordering the fence of the outside area which wasn't destined for public viewing- you're usually safe from that on the weekends, but during the week it's been known to happen.

PN me your email and I'll let you know how to get the climbing permit.

Garry,

I need to do some digging on that, since there is at least another Hummel in Germany, as well as more SdKfz 251s- also, some of the exhibits get swapped between various collections.
