The new JLTV..coming soon, later, later yet, maybe 2012!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The humvee replacement JLTV "Joint Light Tactical Vehicle" production has been pushed back two more years, from 2010 to 2012. The Army will issue a rquest for proposal to AM General, GDLS, Caillac Gage, and BAE Systems in early 2008 and award design/development contrracts in the 2nd half of said year. The final design will (maybe) picked in 2010, production to begin (maybe) in 2011, with the vehicle are to enter into servise by late 2012 with full prodution level in 2013.
The reason given for the roll back for this vehicle to enter U.S. service is that the MRAP is competing for resources.

HI Mark! Hi Folks!

Yea! Surplus Hummvees for all!

Afraid not Mark! Hummvees are NOT clearned by DOT and EPA for resale to civilians.

Some five years ago or so a farsighted group pooled they'er moneys and bid on a block of coded out humvees at the USMC rebuild center in Barstow Ca. They won the bid, one member was a retired MT mech and within a month they were offering rebuilt Humvees on the open market..and as unhappy as the Corps and DOD or anybody else was there was nothing they could do about it. And these vehicles had the ordinal air-cooled diesel engines. Also they didn't fall under the airbag requierments because they were built before the law was passed.

I have heard about that event. I understand DOT and EPA where very upset the USMC for not cuting those bodies into small parts so those guys could do what they did.

Not unlike the old M151s. DOT didn't want those out in the civilian market and most of them got cut into four parts. Still a few of them made it onto city streets.

Here in El Paso, there is a guy who has some F104 Starfighter airframes. The frames had been cut to de-mil them. However he has found away to repair those cuts and has a crew working at making one of them flyable. He already has a pair of F100 Super Sabers that have been restored.

There was at least one civilian F-104 flying. It was a Canadair built plane that through some quirk did not fall under MAP 9Military Assistance Program) rules. There are some F-86 type Sabres flying around. They are similar. They were built by Canadair and actually had Canadian designed engines so they were completely free of US de-mil regs. As I remember the civilain F-104 story (It was being used by a famous Woman flyer to break the womens speed record which had been stagnant for years) the big problem was getting a J-79 engine that was legal to use

There is also a team out there using a wingless F-104 to try and set a new land speed record

Ya we have several M 151s running around here and one ex-USMC "Mighty-Mite", the M 151s were sheard in the middle (de-miled) and then someone with far to much time on thier hands welded them back together. Our local junk yard dealer bid on four copper jet engine "cans" that had been declared surplus some years ago at Cherry Point MCAS which is also the Navys rotory wing aircraft rebuild center, he hauled them home and when he opened them he found he now owned two re-built jet engines, When the Maine Corps and Navy found out about it they demanded he return the engines, Well between tobacco spits while being intervewed for TV he told them to "stick it in their eye and see you in court". In the end he had to return the engines "BUT" the Navy had to pay him the market value of the two engines, hes still smiling about that one.

Actually there is a civilian F-104 demonstration team:
www.starfighters.net/Home_Page.html

I saw them at the Langley AFB airshow a couple of years ago - although admittedly the routine is a little boring. Zoom from the left, zoom to the right... Not a lot of maneuvering Wink

Somehow,

a lot of people in Europe are apparently blissfully ignorant of this fact, there are quite few privately owned HMMWVs around (I'd rather have a GP or an M38A1). Some guy I occasionally run into even has a brand new IFAV fresh from the USMC... Anybody got the winning numbers for next saturday's lottery? Smile
