This one is for Roy
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I found this little baby (along with an M60A3) by accident. Neither was on the AFV register. They were located in front of building 635 on Steward AFB in Smyrna TN. Interesting how they mounted both a .50 Cal and .30 Cal MG.

Here is the number 537 stamped below the left rear lifting eye.

Hi Joe_D! Hi Folks!

Super!

It is a little odd that it has a 30 cal, but historical that is OK. The M114 was first equiped with the 30 cal. I remember the M114A1s I worked with had labels for 30 cal ammo on the bulkheads. Only the M114A2s had 7.62mm labels on the bulkheads.

Thanks Joe!

Did you notice if there was a number stamped under the Right towing eye? I found it a couple inches lower than the Left one which was pretty tight against the eye and it is usually a different number

I saw that in Farrell PA. I think one is the build number, one the Ordnance serial number, as on M41s/M42s. Does somebody with interior access to one want to see which matches the dataplate?

I don't think those numbers mean anything.

We have a stripped M114 in front of the Armory here (Pictures will follow eventually) and it has different numbers on the back. When I have time I will check it against the Data Plate which I can see through the empty vision block opening. I also have a couple of M59's, one which is not on the registry that I will photograph. I am curious where the SN numbers are for them.

Sewart AFB has long been closed. I presume (especially with the cav pennant pained on) that is at a Tennessee ARNG facility on the former base?

In late 1979 I was in the Tennessee National Guard and was assigned there with Attack Helicopter Troop, 278th ACR. I think we just referred to it as 'Smyrna Airport'.

In 1976 it was still Stewart Air Force Station. My wife had to drive up there from Nashville where she was going to grad school to get her ID when I was in Basic

If the data plate is missing, the serial number should still be stamped into the hull, just behind where it was mounted.

I would imagine you aren't referring to 'Stewart AFB' that is (or was) in Newburg N.Y.

I lived there back in the mid to late 60's.

No I know it was in Tennessee (It was the ONLY AF facility in the state) Do I have the naem wrong? I'll have to dig out an old Air Force Almanac at home. I also know it was a station and not a base

Sorry, should've said Sewart, It's still in bold letters on the air field fire station.

Fourth Squadron 278th ACR was the Aviation side of the regiment but I believe they are now 117th CAV. A lot changed when they got back from Iraq. The 1st Squadron that I worked with was in Athens TN. Athens is now an MP unit.
