M60A3 with squares!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

That was a Berlin Brigade test pattern (I think). And the tank is an M60A1, not an M60A3. No thermal shroud, open right side range finder blister, smaller doghouse.

I don't think I've seen that on the M60 series.

I believe the Brits used a similiar scheme on the Centurions or Chieftains, but that can be confirmed by those in-the-know from the UK.

Brits had a white & grey urban camo color scheme in Berlin. Like the Chieftain in Delran NJ.

Roy:

Great picture of a Dual-Tex scheme. They must have been a pain to paint, especially on the curved surfaces of the M60-series.

I'm writing because we had an M60A1 with a Dual-Tex scheme in the squadron that I was in: 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. The tank was in H Company, and was commanded by SSG Champion (see the thread called "G Troop, 3rd ACR, Ft. Bliss, Tx" for a bit more on SSG Champion). SSG Champion's tank sported the Dual-Tex camo scheme when I arrived in-country (February 1979), and it stayed that way until the tank was replaced by a new M60A3 in about February 1980. SSG Champion's A3 stayed in factory Forest Green until a squadron paint detail did all the squadron's equipment in the 'standard' MERDC (?) scheme in the Fall of 1980.

I never asked SSG Champion about the camo scheme — who painted it, why they did the Dual-Tex scheme for this vehicle, why others weren't done as well, etc. I do remember an article on the Dual-Tex scheme in an issue of Armor magazine from the late '70s, so I had heard of it, but I had never seen it on an active duty vehicle. I believe that the Armor article was written after the scheme had been tested on some tanks in Texas.

So, given the one-off camo scheme . . . I was wondering if perhaps this is a photo of SSG Champion's mount. The building in the background looks the same as our barracks (I know, I know . . . what Kasern in Germany didn't look like that?), and the layout of the road & parking — what I can see of it — looks the same as the east end of our quadrangle. If only I could move the tank out of the way — there should be an M4A1E8 just behind it, parked in front of the barracks. The tank markings are pretty much impossible to make out, and I can't recall if SSG Champion's tank had a blue band on the bore evacuator or not. It's interesting that the M85 is mounted in this picture; the tank has probably just returned from an alert or somesuch (although SOP was to go straight to the wash rack).

OK, that's it! A little musing, and tip-toeing through my memories . . .

Cool photo!

Actually, I have been working on an article about Dual Tex as a follow on to a couple of paint articles I submitted to MV magazine.
I need some good photos for the work, so if any of you 2nd Cav guys have pics you can send me with publishing permissions, I would be in your debt.

Roy, is that a public domain DoD pic? where did you find it?

Sabot,
In '86 I did a Gunnery with Fox 40 (Berlin BDE Tank Co) and they were running the gloss OD green on their M60A3's. They did have one tank painted in their "Urban Camo" paint scheme made of squares but it was different shades of Grey. If only digital cameras were around back then.

Squardron Signal had a book on the M60 20 plus years ago I believe had some pictures of that paint scheme and the reason why it was tried. Mine dissapeared many moons ago after many moves.

Looks like mud is covering the bumper numbers. Maybe it was on alert. Tail light is on so it's probably running.

Chris, right click on the picture, select "Properties" at the bottom and you can see the web address at DoD for the picture.

If a photo is used, the only thing DoD and the individual services request is to credit it to DoD and the individual who took the photo if that info is listed with the picture.

Good luck with your book.

There was an M60A1 with Dual-Tex at Fort Knox in 1978. It was in the Cav (I can't recall which unit number it had then - the squadron that trained AOB, AOAC, ANCOC, etc). I've got a pic of it someplace, but not here in Iraq. Cool

No, it had nothing to do with Berlin Bde.. It was a forerunner of the modern pixalted cammo schemes. I know 2ACR and 11ACR had vehicles done up in it. I also remember seeing some 1AD tanks in it at Graf in `78.

Hence my statement "I think". I know I had seen a photo of a Berlin Bde tank with the pattern, but wasn't sure if it was specific to them or they were one of many who tested the pattern.

Hi Folks!

While I was lurking over at Missing-lynx.com I ran acrossed this post which has links to some more 2nd ACR vehicles with squares.

www.network54.com/Foru...ls+ca/1080

The first link didn't work for me, but the other two have a number of good pictures of 2nd ACR vehicles.

Poor guy has a question and no one has given him the correct intell. My login doesn't work or I would tell him those racks are the "CAP" system that was installed on the (correction posted 10/02/07 vehicle is a M233, the M220 is the number for the TOW system itself) M220 TOW carriers. A vehicle that Scouts had before the M901 TOW vehicles were fielded.

Sept 30, 2007, 7:49 MDT, update to this post:
That vehicle was also used by the anti-tank squad (two vehicles) of the heavy weapons platoon of the mech infantry companies and the anti-tank platoon (12 vehicles) of the combat support companies of the mech infantry battalions in Germany. I don't have any info on deployment in the states other that the scouts squads in the 3rd ACR had one vehicle per squad. The scouts platoons in Germany received one per squad as replacements for the M114 while the second vehicle in each squad was a standard M113 APC.

Spot Report!
Sgt, Scouts Out!
