Hooked on Hunnicutt
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I picked up my first Hunnicutt book today. Paid $42 for "Sheridan". Now I know why you guys are always quoting these books. Gonna have to work a little OT and get the rest! (Okay, a lot of OT! Mr. Green )

Side Note: I saw there was an AA version of the Sheridan contemplated, with twin 25 mm autocannons. My question is: If the Canadian Army called their AA vehicle "Skink" and the nickname for Sheridans was "Shanks", then an AA version of the Sheridan built in Canada would be called a "Skank? Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes

Hi Tank Lord! Hi Folks!

- Tanklord
I picked up my first Hunnicutt book today. Paid $42 for "Sheridan". Now I know why you guys are always quoting these books. Gonna have to work a little OT and get the rest! (Okay, a lot of OT! Mr. Green )

Side Note: I saw there was an AA version of the Sheridan contemplated, with twin 25 mm autocannons. Mr Hunnicutt has you NOW! Many CIA agents are going to be paying for his grandkids to go to college! I have all but the Patton and Abrams books. Still watching for them at a price I am willing to pay.

Skanks! Confused
I found the contemplated versions of the Sheridan very interesting when I first picked up my copy. When I was at Ft Bragg, I remember a conversion with the Battalion Commander about how fast we were pushing our M114s. I said something like if you want us scouts to get out in front and not slow down the Sheridan tank companies, give us Sheridan hulls without turrets and we would not have any troubles leading his tanks. I remember him laughting at that suggestion. After I saw what was in the Hunnicutt Sheridan book and remembering him laughting at my idea, I think he knew about the Recon version that was being contemplated. To bad the Army didn't follow through.

I always thought the Sheridan was a great tracked vehicle from the turret ring down. It just needed a different main gun in that turret. But I guess it worked out in the long run because a lot of the failures of the 152mm gun/launcher system in the M551 and the M60A2 have turned into success with the M1 Abrams.

Sgt, Scouts Out!

I have all ten of Hunnicutt's books and consider them excellent value for the money. Mind, it took a lengthy search & destroy mission to find them all. Wink

Just scored "Sherman" for $106 and "Bradley" for $48! Now, if I can just get them past the mail inspectors, (Mami and the kids) I got it made! Between E-bay and Alibris books, I am finding a lot of Mr. Hunnicutt's books available. Just a matter of being patient.

I need to get my copy someday on the M551. What an awesome looking vehicle.

New, original copies are still available from RZM. This is a good volume to have because it also covers the M41 and derivatives in detail as well, it's well worth the price.

The M551 was, in many ways, awesome. Anyone who ever pulled the trigger on a main gun round can really vouch for that. Mr. Green

Oh, I believe that. I've seen pics of the Sheridan firing and the first 2 road wheels are in the air! Shocked

I just looked at Amazon and they are showing it in stock at $55.20. They also show Halftrack, Bradley, and Armored Car in stock prices from $50.40 to $65.65

The prices (used) on some of the others are almost obscene

Don't forget abebooks, I've picked up more than one rare book at excellent prices through them. Also, sometimes you luck out at shows- I just picked up "Quarter Ton" for EUR 19,-, which is below the original issue price and waaay below Amazon's used book department.

Agreed. Abebooks is the place I look for used books. My Amazon references were for new books. I've never used them for used books

I will check out the Abebooks site. Been working a lot and Mami gave me the green light, as long as I don't neglect her! Laughing Wink

Also not to be neglected is the following meta-book search engine:

Yeah, used books are a must for building your library of hard to find material! Over half of mine are from Amazon or ebay and treasure them over the new books.

Still waiting for RZM to reprint "Firepower" and "Patton".

Bloody highway robbery what some ask for them used. For the money they're asking I could finance a trip to FT Knox and glean all the info from the Armor School Library, where ever they moved it to on post Evil or Very Mad .

I am up to 5 of them now: Sherman, Sheridan, Armored Cars, Bradley, Pershing. I have a 50% coupon for Barnes and Noble so I will get Half Tracks from them. Wish they still had new copies of Patton and Firepower, would use the coupon for these.
