Finland puts old armor on sale ...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

OK I wasn't the only one to see small arms and artillery designations in the Finnish documents. Rikard saw them too and did the translations. It seems unusual for ones and two of any old artillery to be sold off. We can only hope the curators have a well-thought out plan for deaccessioning (in English - house cleaning) the collection.

(OT _ I am surprised at how difficult it is for me to understand ANYTHING written in Finnish. No wonder it took more than 500 yrs for Christianity to reach the Finns after all their Scandinavian neighbours had converted. No body knew what the other guys were saying!)

If you can believe it it's the Finnish Defense Department/Force who are clearing out surplus. Finns used to keep anything and everything serviceable in storage in case of an emergency. They still have German sFH18 howitzers listed as active, modernized and new caliber but still. Curators of different museums were asked if they wanted anything, they took what they wanted and what was left was put on sale. There was also the issue of repeated requests by the international collector community. These kind of auctions have been common over the years, what makes this one different is the tanks. The scrap metal prize alone is quite sizeable but an auction winning bid will most certainly be higher.

*AMENDED*
In my original post I was operating under the assumption that the down payment to be paid at the end of the auction was 10 times higher (10 000 vs. 1000 as I added a zero in the haste of my first translation) and a quick price check on high quality steel per ton showed that high quality steel was traded for approx 350-400$US ... well, 10.000€ seemed reasonable then.

Hehe ...well, Christianity did reach the Finns on repeated occasions in the form of crusades during that time period. The Finns had a hard time conveying that tough to the invading Swedes, Danes and Germans. "- Fer fooks sake, not again. It's the third time this year I've been force baptized!"

The scrap metal prize alone is quite sizeable, the 10.000€ starting price reflects that pretty good, but an auction winning bid will most certainly be higher.

Where have you got this information? It is not true! There is no fixed starting price except if somebody has left a written offer. In that case the highest offer is the starting price at the auction.

The winner has to give a 1.000 € "confirmation" payment.

My mistake, I added a zero in the haste ... so much for translating Finnish. It is indeed a 1000€ down payment. But as there is a 1000€ down payment then that should then be the starting price (or minimum price)??? Or am I wrong yet again?

The Finnish Defence Forces web site www.mil.fi has now an illustrated auction list about the items:

The auction was last week. Any news on buyers, price, etc?

Whoops read it too fast ! I was sort of overwhelmed by the apparent good condition of the vehicles shown in the photos (less the Stug's of course), and the many views of those late WWII and early post-war British vehicles. Not as common a sight as the mainstream WWII and Cold War vehicles.

If I translate the European style date properly the Auction is September 25, 2007 [25.9.2007] So unless I lost a month in the last few days, or y'all just don't do August, you still have time to arrange the loan to buy one.

I should say, a Panzer division as in April/May 1945, because I'm not sure he'll be able to completely restore all the German tanks he owns..
