Busted Tracks
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Blair! Hi Folks!

- blair

I'm stunned by the carnage.

Why?
That is the function of an AFV. To take the hit and hopefully the crews will be able to walk away from it.

I remember seeing a yard like that in Vietnam at the Long Binh major logistical base. Rather that vehicles parted side by side, Long Bin had them in columes. Colume beside columes of M48s, M113s, couple of M577s and M88s, some V150s and all types of wheeled vehicles.

Yards like that develope when damaged vehicles are collected for back haul. Those that can be repaired going to a depot for rebuild. Those that are passed the point of repair, get stripped of good parts and any special items that might be on board and the remains sold for scrap.

Nothing new there.

Yep, what Roy said. If I recall correctly, he and I turned I our respective vehicles in not so very far from that yard at Long Binh before we came home (from Bien Hoa) after disarming them at Phu Loi. I have a couple of pics of the troop making that road march from Phu Loi-Long Binh.

Those damaged vehicles don't just get left out there on the roadside, ya' know. Wink

Ok......so its a boneyard, what else would you except after over four years of fighting, why this boneyard, because the military doesn't have the resoures to repair them......manpower, repair parts, and in the case of the M1s repair centers with the tools, jigs and tech know-how in Iraq.

Brings back recent memories (bad),

We were unfortunatly located right next to where they drug the latest casulties of IEDs before they transported them out. Had to drive right by them on the way out. Gave you that extra incentive to stay sharp. Some morbid *&^%*'s would take pictures. I guess it's like all the gawkers you get at a car wreck.
