Strykers, rear tires and down ramp
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Strykers, rear tires and down ramp

Hi Folks!

Ran acrossed these two photos over at Army dot Mil.

Has anyone else noticed how the rear tires on loaded Strykers
(and this one doesn't even have the bar armor system installed) seam to be a bit over loaded?

Following is the link to the photo with the caption, click on the picture for a super size view.

Nice detailed photo of the inside of the ramp and the lift system. The old M113 used a single cable. Looks like the Stryker is
using two chains.

Hi Roy,

My guess is that since it appears they are operating in the sand they have set the CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System) system to 'sand' mode which would lower the tire pressure significantly.

Roy,

I agree with Mark's analysis...lowering tire pressure is standard practice for off-roaders operating in deep sand (only way I survived Great Sand Dune National Monument, Colorado in a CJ-7).

Good job using those bicycle chain thingys (and two of them) on the ramp...the cable arrangement was woefully inadequate on the M113 ramp system given the kind of abuse heaped upon them (and the loss of leverage that results from that mounting point anyway).

Both of these photos were taken in a training environment (my guess is the NTC). Note the MILES gear on the .50 cal on the top photo and MILES on the helmets and chests of the soldiers. Slat armor is not used in training, except at home station to familiarize drivers with the different automotive characteristics, etc.
