New Book Alert!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hello follow CIA members and other Folks!

An old member of this DG, whom I don't recall posting anything for some time, has a new book coming out about Marine Tankers in Vietnam, possible in November!

That would be Ed Gilbert who has done two other GREAT books on Marine tankers!

I know what I want for Christmas!

Spot Report!

Thanks for the info. here is a link to the Amazon page

www.amazon.com/MARINE-...317&sr=1-6

One thing - looking at the artwork on the cover it shows ACAVs. Did the Marine Corps use any M113s of any varient in Vietnam (or anywhere else?)

(this is not an endoresement of Amazon, but they are a good source of information no matter where you actually purchase your books :-))

And it helps to remember that the person we know as Ed Gilbert uses Oscar Gilbert as his name on the byline (That caused me SO much trouble when i was trying to find his earlier books at first)

Bob,

That is a well-known picture of U.S. Army M113 ACAV's on the top half of the cover of the book illustration (and you can see "U.S. Army" markings on them). It's use in this application is inexplicable. To the best of my knowledge, the USMC never used M113's in any combat application in Vietnam.

I am totally perplexed by this choice of cover illustration for the subject at hand given that nowhere in the extensive book description is there any reference to joint operations with Army units.

I too was surpised to hear the Marines used M113s, but if I recall this subject came up back on the old AFV News DG Site some time ago.

Anyway how from the individual who has done tons of research on Marine Armor.

Mr. Gilbert saw this thread and is having problems posting here. He send me an e-mail with the following:

"Saw your note on the AFVNews site, but for whatever reason I am not allowed to post there and notes to the admin go unanswered.

This is scheduled for release in early November.

Yes, the USMC did indeed use M113s, but that's not a photo of USMC M113s; some will be in the book. For scheduling reasons dust jacket art frequently has to be done even before the publisher gets the final manuscript and photos - just one of those business thangs. (Compare the prototype dust cover of my Pacific book, complete with LVT(A)-4s, on Amazon as compared to the real thing.)

M113s were used by 3rd Tank along the DMZ, one of Joe Sleger's innovations for a mobile command post and tracked logistics, kind of like the M39s used by 1st Tank in Korea. Sleger started as an enlisted man - as you will recall he was a section leader in Sweet's platoon at First Naktong. By Vietnam he was a Lt Colonel and CO of 3rd Tank for a tour.

The M113s were never very popular with the USMC, and never were used in any numbers. But the USMC did indeed use them."

Ed Gilbert

Hopefully the site Admins will be able to figure out why Ed cannot post and help him rejoin us.

Roy, (and Ed, if you're reading this)

Is Ed successfully registered here but cannot post? We've had some issues lately with the I.P. validator site "Whois" blacklisting certain I.P.'s that had histories of spamming (the IP, not the individual), but we've gotten those cleared up when we contacted the registrants (admins sends them an email and if they respond, they get cleared). We also had a problem with a member of JG300 who was having a problem but we solved it. Admin will not knowingly ignore Ed's issue or emails, I promise. We want to get him (and anybody else with login/posting/registration issues) "onboard". In one case, we used a tracker to find the snag successfully.

I have a "throwaway" email address he can send me his message at...I will forward it to the adminstrators personally AND post it in the Moderator's Forum for Admin action. Have him send and/or resend a description of his problem to:

ascout @ earthlink.net

(take the spaces out) Put "Registration at AFV Forum" in subject line.

...and yeah...I figured it was probably an eager publisher issue with the picture on the cover, not his own selection. Wink

Doug
