Who's "GoogleEarth-fu" is strong?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Who's "GoogleEarth-fu" is strong?

I fired it up recently and registered (and even posted) successfully, and have found a couple of unposted sites of interest, but for the life of me haven't figured out how to append a "placemark" to a post or the GoogleEarth map (yes, I check to make sure it's not a duplicate). I follow the wizard that always leads me back to login (when I already have). How do I get a placemark to "share" and append to the upper left area of a post (these would be in the "military" area of the GoogleEarth forum, obviously)?

Anybody? (specifics, please, I'm really stuck and don't want to experiment and PO the mods at GoogleEarth or annoy the readers by doing it wrong).

Thanks in advance.

Doug,

When you click "Share Post" the posting wizard page opens.
Click on the hightlighted "Google Earth Community" button.
When that opens, click "register", top left corner.
Once you have registered, minimize that page.
You will be back at the posting wizard page.
Continue to post your placemark.

I'll take another look. It always does that, even though I'm registered and logged in when I go to do this. Then I get lost. Rolling Eyes

Well, I told it wrong...every place I said "register" should have been "login".

Sorry about that...

OK, I seem to have made progress:

bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/sh.../0#1039769

...but I have that big, stupid "pushpin"...and everbody else seems to display nice little yellowish dots (so much more more discrete). Is that something I can edit now, or is that what you see and only I see the pushpin? If not the case, how do I display dots in the future? I see how to change style and scale of icon, but changing to a dot does not seem to be an option.

The trick is you have to login while the posting wizard is open. And you have to minimize the login page (not close it).

Pushpin will become a permanent marker in a few hours/days.

OK, I think I've got it now...even got the icon right. But for some reason I get double labels and split placemarks when I only "mark" it once. Minor annoyance, but I'd like to cut that out. I can obviously delete one, but I'm concerned that if I delete the wrong one, I'll bugger the entire placemark...any danger of that?

Here's the last one:

bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/sh...ost1039832

(Guess what, the Dutch Army obviously stepped in and crunched what was available on the overhead on this one)

The split placemarks aren't showing up here.

I wonder whose convertible that is?

I found the digital camoflage paint in the lower left corner of the google map interesting. not just the fizzy out of focus deception that I see at Aberdeen. It is almost like they had a big camoflage tarp they spread out when the picture was taken Smile

Yeah, I'd tried to spy on Aberdeen, but it was no joy. Laughing

Was just wondering if any of the Vietnam vets here have placemarked any of their old bases in Vietnam.

Someone placemarked this mountain top, full of B-52 bomb craters
