In fact, as regards NoCal and the Pacific NW, the wind was coming IN from the ocean (moist air) passing in circular fashion around and over the deserts (losing that moisture, and out over SoCal). Pretty typical of this pattern on many occasions. |
I have experienced this difference in weather between SoCal and Nocal first hand. I was in the US on business in Janurary, started off in Vegas, cool but very, very dry. Then spent the weekend in the bay area, and visited Jacques Ponytrax Ranch and the collection, where the temperatures had plumeted to freezing, and I mean freezing! And then on the Monday I went down to the Greater Los Angeles area where it was pleasantly warm and sunny (21 degrees celsius). In fact when I drove to the Chino museum, I could have stopped and bought Strawberries straight from the field.........
By the way Jacques collection is stunning, Kudos to him and his team
Mike Green was doing the tour, but as I was the only Brit I had to do the piece on the Conquerer!

As a Brit, you can be forgiven for not knowing the expression in the colonies: "The coldest winter I ever saw was summer in San Francisco."

Not picture related, but I was listening to a radio story about wildfires in Southern California, and remembered the Littlefield collection is in that general area. Anything to report to the befuddled masses? |
The wildfires were 400-500 miles to the south of Portola Valley so no real danger, no. |
As Rikard pointed out, no. While wildfires can occur anywhere, Northern California in general is not subject to the seasonal phenomena of Santa Ana winds, that combination of super strength, super dry, super hot winds coming off the desert to the east of us (that they dont have) that drives these fires so ferociously and makes them so dangerous (and nearly impossible to fight, as this one was). In fact, as regards NoCal and the Pacific NW, the wind was coming IN from the ocean (moist air) passing in circular fashion around and over the deserts (losing that moisture, and out over SoCal). Pretty typical of this pattern on many occasions.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...a_Ana_wind
(Notice the influence of the mountains in all this, they channel the winds right over us, see the image in the Wikipedia article)
The Cedar Fire of '03 was also in mid-late October. |
That's right, no Santa Ana's up here!! I grew up with them in Orange County and don't miss them a bit.
So what did we in NorCal do instead? Yeah, we had to go and have an earthquake this evening . Can't let SoCal have all the fun!

Getting closer. One of the mechanics said they maybe testing the engine this week. I'm hoping to get back there again this Saturday and will hopefully get another update. |

That's quite bizarre because this evening, I was in Panther withdrawal too, looking for more Littlefield Panther pictures on the Internet..
Hope that we can manage to visit the Sinsheim museum with its new "attraction" (Panther 243) soon.. However autumn/winter are really not good seasons to visit museums like this one.. April or May will be better !!

Nice Chris,
We had those turret trainers at Knox when I went through basic but we never used them, I started off as a 19EB8 (B8 meaning A3 tanker). Didn't get on an A1 until 1986. At least one is still around. With todays technology some one could probably take one and make a great video game.
