Bold Quest - Combat Identification Exercise
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

We've had some pictures from the "Bold Quest" exercise already but here's some more from a Swedish point of view. The exercise took place during August-September in the heat at the NTC in the Mojave desert. 13 nations participated, 9 of them with materiel and troops. The Swedes were pleased at the opportunity to test combat systems in a "safe" desert environment, as the dry heat of Fort Irwin is seldom (read never) experienced in Scandinavia (we build our stuff for snow, and lots of it).

Is that a custom-fitted camouflage cover on the vehicle?

The track on that vehicle looks a lot like Bradley track. Wonder if it's the same?

Wow, very cool photos. I do not think I ever saw something like this before. Sort of like Reforger in reverse! Laughing

Possible a NATO standard is working it's way into the different countries AFV Fleets. Look at the MBTs, many of them look like they have the same type of track block now days.

Or maybe it's due to the down sizing of defense contractors world wide, there are fewer types of block available. If they can get different countries to use the same type of blocks, the price would be lower.

Probably another fine product by Diehl- and most tracks have a tendency to have similar looks and break-down, except for that Rooskie stuff. Wink

Is there a particular benefit for custom-fitted camoflage netting?

In thinking back to my time and US Army camouflage nets. I like the idea of no set time needed after stopping, no take time before moving out, doesn't need space for storage on the vehicle, and with a custom fit, it should not get in the way of hatchs and weapons.

Looks like it should reduce the work load of the crew to me.

I thought part of the intent of camo netting was to hide the outline of the vehicle and disguise the deployment of equipment an dpeople under a somewhat 'fuzzy indistict blob'.

I see this as more of a next generation camo paint. It probably helps disguise the IR signature and makes some effort to 'fuzzy up' the visual of the vehicle but it does little to hide the general outline of the vehicle

As someone who spent more time than I care to remember untangling myself from camo netting I agree that the custom-fitted nets would be way less labor intensive. But, as Bob Smart mentioned, I thought that one of the reasons for camo netting was to break up the outline of the vehicle (or whatever was being camoflaged) & this just doesn't seem to do a good job of that. Also, if paint can do the same thing, why bother with the nets?

Well the netting is probably the ultimate in 'rough finish, non reflective paint' and probably has properties that paint just can't provide.
