The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

*sniff* Crying or Very sad

...even if the A3 model is a "young whippersnappers" tank, it's got enough lineage to the A1 that I can relate. Now the A1...that was a tank! Mr. Green

May have been their (3AD) last gunnery on the M60A3, but the 8ID was using them into the summer of 1989. My company (A, 5-77 AR) was the last unit to fire a gunnery at Graf on the A3 in June 1989.

Our company deployed with 4-8 IN to support their gunnery and ARTEP. We were able to fire a full up TTVII & VIII just for fun. We had so much ammo, it was surreal.

Some high ranking individuals (colonel/lt. col) showed up with some rounds that had real brass casings. The asked us to place some padding in the tank and to carefully handle the round. We fired two of them and gave them the nice shiny casings.

I remember watching this on AFN when I was in Buedingen,

They made a big deal about Freidburg turning in their M60's for M1's, called it "End of an Era in 3 AD". My room mate (a Scout) looked at me and said "I guess you guys don't count." or something to that effect. We still had 36 of them old girls and were going to gunnery in FEB '86. They kept them quite a while too from what I remember (Though not as long as you guys Rob). Something about being in the CAV and in Buedingen made us sorta Red Headed Step Children.

Thanks Dontos for the memories

In 1988 'We' (4/32 Ar, 3rd AD) went thru transition from M-1IP's to M1A1's. While at Graf (Rg 117) shooting TT VIII, an M60A3 lumbered up onto the range, passed all the tanks lined up to fire, and pulled into a BP #1 on lane 1. The crew then conducted a day TTVIII. It was from 3/12 CAV. I believe this was in May/June 88.

I remember thinking 'Damn! That tank sure is slow,.....and OLD!" Mr. Green

That video brought back that Graf memory.

I'm looking for some 1989 AFN news reports. I was interviewed immediately after reenlisting on our CAT display tank.

General Woodmansee (5th Corps Cmdr) was there as Gen Jowlin (3rd AD Cmdr) conducted my reenlistment. We were standing on the front slope of the Demo Tank.

I am still in search of photos or film, as well as any articles.

M60A3s were STILL used until just 3 years ago(!) as OPFOR at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (formerly Combat Maneuver Training Center) in Germany...

But that really doesn't count. The M60 MOS (19E) went away in 91 or 92, I believe. I remember all the 19 E's in my battalion (3/70, 5th ID) basically got a memo stating that they were officially converted to 19K (Abrams Crew MOS)
