The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Folks!

Ran acrossed a note over at the Army Web site. The Army will be buying an additional 95 Stryker NBCRVs.

I wonder if these will be just adding more NBCRV vehicles to the total inventory or possible be replacements for the older M93 FOX NBCRVs.
If so that would standarized the NBCR fleet on one vehicle type.

Hi, Roy. Will try and post a comment before my fingers freeze off in this Utah weather Wink

They were testing these when I was at Yuma Proving Ground. It's a rolling labaratory. The manufacturer's rep said that the back of the vehicle is the exact same thing as the Fox.

The NBCRV has many of the same capabilities as the M93 FOX but also has additional systems. The JSLSCAD is a chemical stand-off detector that gives the operator an indication of a chemical cloud out to a range of 5 KM. This is significantly different from the M93 FOX. More importantly, the NBCRV has biological (aerosolized) detection capability. This is completely beyond anything offered onboard the M93 FOX, which only had ground sample capability with CBMS. Aerosolized Biological Agent detection capability is found in the JBPDS (Joint Biological Point Detection System). Previously, these systems were used in a base defense role in SWA (Kuwait) and within the US. NBCRV and the new JSLNBCRS, which is a HMMWV based vehicle, both give the JBPDS a mobile platform. NBCRV is a significant improvement for mobile Bio-detection operations capability beyond the older BIDS system (also HMMWV based) also it improves on the Chemical detection capabilities found in the M93 FOX.

Right you are, Ralph. In fact what I was doing at YPG was testing the JSLSCAD. There were three manufacturers being tested and we had them mounted in Humvees.

Here's what we are talking about. It has a rotating head with a glass lens that 'sees' chemical clouds. I think it was refered to as an 'Infrared Spectrometer'.
