Wheeling & Dealing at Fort Douglas (Attn: Neil)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I talked to the museum curator today at the Ft. Douglas (UT) museum. He said the Composite M4 Sherman is being restored by Carl Smith's crerw in Tooele. (External restoration.) In return they will be giving him Ft. Douglas' M47, M48 & M60.

Thanks again for the info & pics Mark. BTW, any chance you ever get out to Hyrum (M5 Stuart) or Pleasant View (M32 TRV)?

Are they the museums to 'give' or are they still U.S. Govt property?

I hope they have the proper documentation Smile

I didn't think that the gov't released control of anything as recent as M48s and M60s. I thought that by the time they were coming up for disposal the new stricter rules were in place that pretty much forced complete destruction or use as a reef.

(I'm waiting for JoeD to take scuba lessons so he can check up on all those M60s that are now part of fish habitats Laughing )

uh...,

I really don't think they can just give them away. If they were taken off a range then they were still government property. All you have to do is look at past cases where range recovered wrecks were given/sold to non-authorized individuals only to be reclaimed later, sometimes by force with penalties/jail involved. Below is a picture of a recovered vehicle.

From what I understand once an US Army tank/etc is made a range target it's considered disposed of and removed from the books. Problem is quite a few just ended up stored when the newer EPA standards went into effect for hard targets and the stricter requirements for preparing them IAW AR 385-63. Others just never got shot up where they were placed. Not a problem if you are a military installation wanting a display. Transfering to civilians still needs to meet AR 700-131.

If all it took for me to get clear ownership of an M60 I'd refurbish their M4 externally Laughing

Beats taking up scuba diving to get one Bob Wink .
