Tankland #1 - Saracen, M901, M7 Priest, M42 Duster, CTL-3M..
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Tankland #1 - Saracen, M901, M7 Priest, M42 Duster, CTL-3M..

I stopped by the American Society of Military History Museum aka “Tankland, on Friday before I left LA. The owner, Craig, was kind enough to let me in even though they were closed due to the rains.

Actually, it was the first time I have been "recognized" - I was walking around taking pictures & making notes when Craig came up and said "are you Neil Baumgardner?" Needless to say I was a little surprised... He had seen my pics of the South Gate M60 and put 2 and 2 together... From there on Craig was very helpful & talkative, letting me go behind the ropes etc. He has a nice little collection, but could use some help of the volunteer variety - see the link below.

Anyway, here's the first set of pics...

Saracen

M901

M7 Priest - SN stamped on the front hull was 1781

M42A1 Duster

Here's an AFV quiz for ya - can anyone guess what is underneath this mocked up movie Type 95 Ha-Go?

The famous / infamous "Bob Hope tank" - a Marmon-Herrington CTL-3M Marine Corps tank, or at least the bottom half is... The upper half was added to look like a M2A4 for use in movies... Thankfully the turret added for Brisco County Jr has since been removed...

And an M20 - thanks to Craig I now know where to look for the SNs on M8s & M20s (lower left & right corners of the top front hull below the headlight brackets). This one is 6842-0.

Good job, Neil. Craig seems like a real nice guy, the couple of times I've spoken with him by telephone. I keep trying to get up there and rendevouz with Russ Buchan and I swear we're gonna' make it yet...we wanna' poke around in his M48, among other things, just for old times sake. I think he's got a Sheridan, too, and an M60A1 or A3 as well. I'm dyin' to get up to his place....

I've been down there a couple of times and will be back there again hopefully, in May. You'll like the 48. Looks pretty good on the inside. As for Sheridans, I think he has three of them. You guys will have a good time!
