Surviving rare WW2 Sherman variants (Calliope, M12 GMC etc.)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Surviving rare WW2 Sherman variants (Calliope, M12 GMC etc.)

Hello,

I'm willing to do a list of the surviving rare WW2 sherman variants (let's say, from unique prototypes to variants of which less than 10 tanks survived until today)

I have a rough list but my knowledge of this subject is very limited.

* Sherman Jumbos, I have found photos of the following ones :
-Littlefield's
-Brussel Tank Museum's
-Minnesota Military Museum's.

I'm looking for pics of the following ones :
-Fort Carson (M4A3 with a Jumbo turret)
-Fort Knox, LST Building

* M12 GMC, I've found photos of the one stored at Aberdeen

* Sherman Calliope (rocket launcher) 1 vehicle located at Aberdeen, I'm looking for a recent photo of this one.

* M40 GMC , 1 vehicle on display at Aberdeen, photos are available

* Sherman M4A4 with experimental HVSS suspension, 1 vehicle located at Aberdeen, photos available

* Sherman flamethrowers, how many survived through the world, and where are they located? Seems that there are 8 of these tanks in the US.

The BARVs, the Crabs and the DD tanks are already on an another list, the Dozer tanks will be listed in a particular file.

Did I miss some other rare variants?

Pierre-Olivier

Give me a few days and I can tell you of other rare Shermans such as the one with spigot mortars at Fort Knox.

Unfortunately I dont know of any good recent pics of the Sherman Calliope. Its been behind a fence since I've seen it... Of course if a certain someone had ever made it to APG we would have gotten some good pics inside that fenced-in area, but he never made it... Wink

There's 3 or 4 Jumbos in the US - so they probably count as rare. I know there's at least one other - King Cobra - in Germany as well.

IMO, 5/6 or less counts as rare...

Some rare Sherman-based vehicles:

CWS-POA-H5 Sherman flamethrower tank (three)
M4 Sherman composite hull (six)
M4A1E13 Sherman flamethrower tank (two)
M4A3E2 Sherman Jumbo (five)
M4A4(75) Sherman with spigot mortars (one)
M12 GMC (one)
M32 TRV (ten)
M40 GMC (seven)
M42B1 Sherman flamethrower tank (four)
M43 GMC (four)
M74 TRV (ten)

I wish I could say T6 was "behind the fence" somewhere, but probably not...

I wonder if the US & Canadian "Firefly"s should count... The T14 at Bovington might also count...

Other rare WWII and prior vehicles to consider:

M2 Medium (two)
M3A4 Lee (one)
M7 Medium Tank (one)
M39 AUV (six)

T1E1 Heavy Tank (one)
T1E2 Light Tank (one)
T2 Medium Tank (one)
T3 Christie (one)
T4 Medium Tank (one)
T5 Medium Tank (one)
T23 Medium Tank (three)
T26E4 Pershing (one)
T28 Heavy Tank (one)
T29 Heavy Tank (two)
T30 Heavy Tank (four)
T88 HMC (one)

There are probably others I have missed...

Pierre,

Here's a shot of the flame thrower M4 at the Camp Shelby Museum in Mississippi. You tell me what version She is (Not a Sherman expert).

I belive he is refering to a Jumbo (M4A3E2) "Cobra King" spearheaded Patton's drive to Bastogne. There is a photo in Concord's publication "Battle of the Bulge" by Steve Zaloga. This is the one that is painted with the slogan "First in Bastongne" on its side.

Joe

Thanks, I lost all my Camp Shelby Photos with my computer crash several years ago. Having spent two 'cycles' there, I had an excellent library of shots, but .....no more. I think some may be 'floating' on the old AFV DG, but No clue how to reclaim any of those.

Met the curator down there, very nice gentlemen who was very helpful with information on some of 'his' vehicles in the collection.

Neil or Doug, got any links to/from back in 2003/2004 on the old site??

Yes, I've seen such a tank exposed as a monument at the gate of an US Army base in Germany, but I can't remember if it is a Jumbo and where it is located..

Dontos,

I have a funny feeling I'll be seeing Shelby sometime this year. Anything you need me to photo? Let me know. I do have some good shots of the M56 along with more of the flame tank.

Yes as far as I can remember I found several photos of a Sherman tank at Vielseck some months ago, but curiously I can't find any now...
