Another PzKpfw 38(t) to identify in Zhulebino, Russia..
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hello,

Once again, "Sander D" provided me some interesting links. The most interesting to me are those pictures, taken at Tehran (Iran), apparently at Saad abad King House. I think they show 2 of the 50 LT vz. 38 TNHP tanks (Initial export version to Iran, well known as Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) - export version..). What happened to the guns?? They seem to be fake ones..

There is a couple more here:

travel.webshots.com/al...Ww?start=0
image59.webshots.com/5...HoD_fs.jpg

Seems to confirm the location as well.

The "guns" seems to be mounted in the circular opening where the coax-MG used to be while the original opening for the gun appears to be plated over. Compared with the original setup, the turret is not pointing forward but is turned slightly to the left (right, if you look at the tank from the front).

Compare with some of the pictures of the real thing here:
www.militaryphotos.net...hp?t=70875

As for the designation, I believe the tank that Iran got was simply called the TNH. They bought them in 1935 (some sources say 1936) and they were delivered by 1937.
This early TNH formed the basis for the TNH that was offered to the Czech army in 1937/1938 and accepted into the Czech army as the LT Vz.38.
Compared with the Iranian TNH, it had a completely different turret, the distance between the second and third roadwheel was larger, the engines were different and the guns also appear to be of different types.

It was the Czech LT Vz.38 that was produced for the Germans as the Panzerkampfwagen 38(t).

Claus, thanks for your help again. How did I manage not to see the plate over the former gun opening on the turrets.. Weird modification anyway..

I'd say that the gun tubes are real but never meant to be functional on the tank, they look like small caliber naval gun tubes.

One minor point of clarification, only 1 LT-38 was delivered to the Czechoslovak Army before the occupation. 150 LT-38s were on order, but these ultimately only saw service with the German Army as the PzKpfw 38.

Things I learned writing my war in 1938 military analysis paper a year ago...

It would seem a rather strange thing to do to museum vehicle, putting the wrong gun in the wrong place and patching up the hole for the actual gun (though strange things do happen......!).
As you say, the guns look the part, so I wonder if the vehicle was converted to some other use like command tank, artillery observation or similar and the tube mounted as a dummy gun?

Hello,

there seems to be a fourth LT-38/PzKpfw. 38(t) in Russia (see the tank on the right side of the photo..). This photo was apparently taken at ZHulebino. Maybe Taranov could help to find more information about this tank?

Indeed, comparing this Panzer 38(t) and the one from Kubinka, the two could be indeed the same tank (the paint color is the same). But if it is really the case, I wonder why this tank was there at that time.. any guess?

I have to ask: what's up with the bronze-colored Lada (I think) on the pedestal beside the tank?

In ex-communist countries, they are used to put small vehicles like cars or tractors as monuments.. I've seen some of these on russian-speaking forums. Quite curious thing.. probably an ode to the communist technology or knowledge..

Interesting. I am reminded of the ex-DDR Trabants used as set decorations for U2's "Zoo TV" tour (1993).

You still see the occasional Trabbie around eastern Germany...I saw two campers on the street my last trip to Dresden last year...my local colleague got all excited. There's a Trabant and motorcycle museum in Dresden as well and outside you can rent a nostalgic Trabant ride.

Thanks Taranov to confirm my thoughts. I wonder why they brought it to this event..
