Intended Purpose for the SU-76?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Intended Purpose for the SU-76?

Hi,

I'm looking for some additional info pertaining to the Russian SU-76.

The SU-76 seems to be one of the more unusual vehicles in that it was pressed in from everything as a tank destroyer to the role of an assault gun and yet, there are other indications that it was mostly used as an artillery platform.

Was the SU-76 really built as an all-purpose weapon? Or was it manufactured for a specific role? Are there any sources on how the SU-76 was suppose to be employed as dictated by Soviet doctrine?

Thanks.

The SU and Stug type vehicles began to be produced when they develop bigger guns but do not have the technology to place the gun in a rotating turret, much like the US M3 Lee.

Then when things start to turn for the worse, it is quicker/cheaper to produce than standard tanks.

I was going to suggest that the Su-76 filled a role similar to the M-7 Priest. It mounted the then standard field piece on a standard tracked chassis to provide more mobility. It was then used in the myriad ways the standard piece was used with the mobility just adding more flexibility

I've never read anything that would suggest that the original, intended purpose of the SU-76 would have been something else than Assault Gun/SPG.

The Soviets saw potential in the StuG concept and proceeded to develop their own class of vehicles. They in turn, as the StuG, were also employed in other roles, mainly as subsitute tank/tank destroyers, with varying success.

My 2 euro-cents
The factorie(s) turning T-70s could not build T-34s or heavier tanks and the T-70s were obsolete/abandoned (the recconaissance duties were given to LL Valentines - better armoured and better armed with the later marks).
So the factories output was channeled to a most useful task, providing movable direct-fire support to the foot soldiers.
