Gun ID.
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Guys,

Can anybody identify this gun ? The only thing that I know is that it is in US in a Military Base and may be 152mm.

Thanks in advance.

"This 7-inch, 45-caliber, tractor-mounted gun prepares to fire the first shot at Dahlgren on Oct. 16, 1918."

I understand the '7 inch' part but where does the '45 caliber' come in'? What is it a measurement of? Confused

It refers to the length of the barrel in multiples of the calibre. With some armies/manufacturers it is a part of the official designation (e.g. German -7.5cm Kw K40 L43.

It apparently means something to ballistics geeks, although arguement as to just how significant a factor it is will be hotly debated in those circles. Rolling Eyes

I trust this helps

Yet another reason I wish I had visited the old Air-Ground Museum at Quantico before it closed... And this piece is certainly not on display at the new museum...

BTW, I assume this is really a towed piece - akin to the Soviet 203mm towed/tracked guns? No engine on there - ie not truly self-propelled right?

Hi, 'Weed;

I think, if I remember correctly, that 'caliber' in this sense, is the number of times the length of the barrel, or tube, for us CIAs, is divisible by the diameter of the bore. The Navy's Five-inch, thirty-eight caliber gun, for example, has a bore of five inches that is thirty-eight times five inches long.

That's where the designation 'L' comes in when reading of German guns.
