This M3 Lee, is located at 4ID museum and I saw you have it posted. However I didn't know just how much you had on this particular vehicle so I decided to start some research on it. Just a quick look at it and I could see that it still has an engine,(radial). Both barrels seem to have been torched to make them in-operable. The rear tow lugs both have 4428 stamped into them but the differatial coevr up front has 3411 stamped. I suspect that the diff cover is from another M3/M4 possibly. Does anyone else see anything of note? Once I get more detailed information on this vehicle, I will add it to this post.

Hi Jeff:

S/N 4428 should have R/N 3058019 by my reckoning, but Joe probably has the definitive info.

The tow lugs are the right place for the S/N, and this tank has the appropriate late features like the grouser box on the glacis, driver's periscope, and engine compartment rear.

Hey Kurt, good to hear from you again,
I planned on sending this info to Joe very shortly and see what his take on the info is. However my parents are in town for a visit so I dont have much time for the computer, I'm lucky to get on here now.
I've found most Reg numbers on the sides of armor are bogus. I just don't understand why museums don't research what they have better, you'd think they would want to represent the vehicles acurately as possible.

I do not know about conversion to command tanks- in fact that was new to me-, but the majority of M3s lived on as ARVs and artillery tractors.
