The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

There was a guy out here in OR that had an M60A1. I have no idea how he managed to get ahold of it. It was in excellent shape, and he ran it around the dunes all the time. I think someone in CA bought it after he passed away- not Littlefield either. Would love to know the story behind that one. I will post the pics I took of it when I find them.

It seems that most civilian owned M60A1's came from USMC stock, not sure if they are less restrictive than the Army, I'd bet this one fell in that category. IIRC Mr. Littlefield's is one of the few Army (if only) M60A1's in civilian hands.

Thanks for the updates Kurt,

Interesting that the TACOM list got the Ann Arbor VFW Post 423 SN so wrong (They list her as 4410A). How do you confuse those two numbers Confused ?

Maybe it has something to do with the mixed-up registrations? The two tanks were clearly in the same unit. The stenciled R/Ns were both the same style and location. On one it matched the stamped R/N, on one it didn't. The non-matching one had the wrong S/N on the list. I doubt the last painters just made up a R/N, so clearly there was something amiss with the paperwork at some point.

Neil, where is 4389A supposed to be?

BTW, I have a confirmed tank in the area that isn't on the list, possible M60A1/A3. I might be able to check it out this weekend.

Kurt,

I am not tracking 4289A anymore since you confirmed the Ann Arbor Tank SN. The TACOM list doesn't have her either, but doesn't mean she's not out there since all the tanks in front of armory's are still in the Army's inventory.

There are two tanks in Michigan I'd love to check out,

One is listed as an M60, SN 17 in Mount Clemens, Lat/Long 42.565796, -82.978025. From a satellite recon she appears to be an A3. Curious if she's one of the Pilot A3's.

The other is listed as M60A3 SN 5 in Birch Run. Lat/Long 43.259833, -83.776083. This one appears to still have the older Passive sights along with an uncapped searchlight receptacle. But my pictures are kinda grainy.

Being they are so close to Detroit there's a good chance they are Pilot models. If your travels take you that way I'd be most interested in your findings.

Here's a couple of pics of the Freeland PA M60A2 passed on to me by Tom Dinackus.

I also have a pic of the Charlottesville NGIC T-64 and some M59/84 pics he passed on that I will post...

Thanks Neil for sharing,

The hull is correct for the serial number listed. Pretty sure the TACOM list is a double listing of the same tank. Google'n VFW Post 473 I only get some minor mentions in the news but no recent stuff other than an address. Willing to bet the City signed for the tank when time to verify the location and no one from the ALP was around.

Kurt,

On that RN for the Ypsilanti tank, you sure that couldn't be 09A01970 and whoever painted the RN got it wrong ??? Tanks should start with 09 or 9 back then until they changed to the Alphanumeric 6 digit RN's later. It'd be the first 03 I've ever heard of between M48's and M60's.

I'm pretty sure that's right but now you make me doubt myself . . . Unfortunately I didn't have a camera. . .
