Camp Mabry collection in Austin, TX.
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Camp Mabry collection in Austin, TX.

I walked the museum grounds and tried to record / photograph all the museum items. Here's the listing and if I could find the serial number, I've included it as well.
OUTSIDE DISPLAYS
-M24 Chaffee
-M26 Pershing, sn 1766
-M48 Patton, sn 7542
-M60 Patton, sn 289
-M60A1 Patton, sn 8804
-M60A3 Patton, sn 3573A
-M577A2, sn F777
-M75
-M59
-M84, Mortar Track (had a 4 stamped into both front and rear lugs)
-M901A1
-M113A2
-M106A2, sn C59 (personal favorite since it's a Mortar Track)
-M981, sn F2997 (one of two outside)
-M114, 108 / 12U049 on front, 607 rear
-M114, 76 on rear
-M1 Abrams, sn 0155
-D7F dozer
-M7B1 (one of two outside)
-M56 Scorpion (M88, 90mm gun had a date of 1959)
-M42 Duster, sn 472 5472 (on rear data plate)
-M981 (second of two outside)
-M110A2 8inch
-M108
-M44
-M7B1 (second of two outside)
-M728 CEV, sn 142
-M578 (named "Snoopy")

WHEELED VEHICLES OUTSIDE
-M919 MCT (concrete truck with 1979 delivery date)
-M1009 Blazer
-M1008 Pickup
-M101 3/4ton trailer
-M105 1 1/2ton trailer
There were also two towed FA pieces which had no information, one on display and one in a back storage area. I didn't check out the "artillery park" but it looked to be very small pieces kept under an overhang of sorts.

INSIDE DISPLAYS
-M4A3, sn7884 or possibly 17884
-Halftrack (mortar carrier)
-Halftrack (with quad 50)
-M715 jeep pickup (I think)
-1972 Ford LTD staff car
-M151
-M151A2 (with ROPES)
-M151A2 (with M101 trailer)
-M38
-M3 Stuart
-M29 Weasel
-Jagdpanzer 38, "Hetzer" (Baiter) (one of 4 in the U.S. and it's a runner)

I think this is all the items, I will include pictures shortly of the more interesting items.

Thanks Jeff - on the Abrams, sure that isnt D155?

And BTW there's at least 8 Hetzers in the US. All but 1 (Ordnance Museum) or maybe 2 are Swiss G-13 Hetzers...

Jeff,

Get any pictures of the '72 LTD ??? Last one I seen in service was at Castle AFB in 1983 and it was marked as a Security Police car. Thought it was funny since most by then in the Air Force were Plymouth Volare's or Dodge Aspens.

BTW, thanks for the SN's on the M60's. Too bad they don't have an A2, then they'd have the whole package.

Jeff,
Double checking against my earlier list, did you see an M47 Patton or a German Sd.Kfz. 251 SPW half-track?

Neil,
I didn't see an M47 on the grounds or listed as part of the collection. We drove around the post and I didn't see any tanks as displays anywhere. You are correct however about the German Half-track. I didn't pay it much attention but there was one. There was also a BMP outside on display. I just don't care much for other countries armor so I don't pay it much attention. The info I got about there being only 4 Hetzers is from the museums brochure. I could tell it had very recently been moved because the tracks tread edges were shiny and there were marks on the pavement leading to the tank. I apologize for the poor quality of my inside shots.
Here's the M1's serial number. Sure appears to be 0155 on all the skirts and rear areas.
Joe,
The 1972 LTD Custom was used from 1972-1986 if I remember reading correctly. It was painted gloss black at the request of the posts commander so that it would be set apart from all the other staff cars. It had 2-star plates on the front, sorry, no pictures.

Thanks for the info Jeff. A lot of museums have erronous info on how many survivors there are etc - since it was pretty hard to tell outside of word of mouth - until the register that is Wink

Thanks Jeff,

Just curious on the '72 LTD, I kinda have a soft spot for them since so few are left, been years since I've seen a 4 door on the road. Seems like they were the designated "Victim" car in most movies/TV shows of the '70's. Brother-in law had one in high school, had a 351-Cleveland with C6.

Neil,

I'm pretty sure your register is in many a museums computer as an unofficial reference. Wonder how many would admit to it.
