News Pics of AFVs in the South Ossetia conflict (updated)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The story? It's a MT-LB with a ZU-23-2 mounted on the back. Quite comman. The small turret can mount a PKT or PKM, or what ever the 7.62 M.G. is that mounts in it.

Guess I was looking for more than a smart-assed response. I'll ask elsewhere. Rolling Eyes

What the hell? It wasn't ment to be a smart ass answer. You asked for info on the vehicle, I gave it to you. Sorry if I didn't put a bunch of smiley faces or something. Smile , better? Well Neil, I gave him what you suggested and somehow he was offended. Geeze.

Guys, I suggest just backing off at this point. I think its just a misunderstanding, but no need for further inflamation of the topic...

And ironically this has nothing to do with politics...

Taranov,
To clarify - I have seen similar markings on modern German (Heer) army vehicles - and even Dutch army vehicles. In fact its a fairly standard NATO unit symbol - around for decades. Oval inside a rectangle = armored unit...

To be exact, the Wehrmacht used a different and more complicated system...

Well maybe not in Russia, but pretty much in the rest of the world, that is the accepted map symbol for an armored unit. Like Neil said, not Wehrmacht.

Georgia and South Ossetia are not big areas. If the Georgians were attacking S.O. as has been mentioned, and have been pushed back, then we are watching scenes of a withdrawl. Perhaps there are or were established positions, but most of the images are of road moves and destroyed positions.

All the images of green European villages, urgent sweaty men in woodland camouflage and brandishing AKs makes me think back 15yrs ago to the Former Yugoslavian conflict. I wonder if that French photojournalist who did such amazing work for 'Elite' magazine is in there? Yves Debay ...?

As a civilian from the outside looking in. what puzzles me is this:

Clearly the Russians have better tanks than the T-72s that they're fielding now. So where are they?

T-72s are, from what I understand, designed for the conscript army but at least a few of the units currently in Georgia are seasoned veterans; why don't have they have better gear?

Maybe they drew from pre-positioned stocks or from other units to get into the fight faster.

Good question boeman. There are two reasons:

First off, the T-80 got a bad rap in Chechnya due to perceived poor combat performance and high fuel consumption from the turbine engine. That being said, a lot of units still use T-80s. But no major combat formations in the North Caucasus use the T-80 though anymore to my knowledge & information...

Instead, the Russians decided to standardize on the T-90 (itself based on the T-72), but only a handful of units have them. And then there's the question of the high-low mix the Russians tend to like to have - there is supposedly a new "quality" MBT under development with rumors of a 152mm gun - yeah...

So, as a result, the T-72 - albeit upgraded over the years - remains the frontline tank for most Russian combat formations.

Looks like they run like a rabbits... Laughing

I think that comments such as this have no place on this board. We can discuss the equipment, even the tactics without deraugatory comments such as this

I've been working in my "spare time" on a separate project and haven't been checking in regularly. I agree with Neil and Bob's observations and admonitions about comments, which are always tricky when dealing with a "current event" about which some feelings may run high. It's always preferred when, as usually happens, members moderate their own comments before posting. Let's please try to keep it that way.

Also, I would reiterate the admins policy regarding the number of pictures posted within a single page (not greater than 10). If necessary, it's entirely permissable (encouraged even), to start another thread on same subject and call it "cont'd" or "part II" or whatever so we know it's related to an existing thread. This is done to ease the burden of page load times, especially for members not on high-speed connections.

'Preciate it.
