Georgia On My Mind.....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

If Georgia was a full-fledged NATO partner then wouldn't the US and other NATO members be obligated to get involved? Wasn't NATO formed for mutual protection of it's members from the Russians (USSR)?

Depends...

First off, Georgia isnt currently a NATO member - wasnt sure if that part was a "rhetorical question" or not...

Secondly, if it was, it could have invoked Article 5 - which would have lead to a vote by the Atlantic Council. Turkey tried to invoke Article 5 in 2003 in response to a perceived threat from Iraq once the U.S. invaded. The NATO members didnt see this as an Article 5 issue... And Turkey wasnt happy - so in part this meant 4th ID couldnt invade via Turkey...

The NATO Council might have taken a similar view of the South Ossetia war, particularly because of Georgia's actions at the onset - not to go down that debate... That being said, once Russian started invading Georgia "proper," an Article 5 response might have become more likely...

Along those lines, the strong US verbal response/warning to the attack on Senaki may have lead in part to the end of hostilities on Russia's part...

Frankly, I was a little surprised the USAF C-5s delivering Georgian troops to Tbilisi from Iraq (very under-reported) didnt lead to any possible MiG-29 intercepts/confrontations... Obviously (IMO) the Russians were warned to not intercept/confront...

Apparently all the Georgian troops in Iraq as part of the bigger NATO/GCTF mission were airlifted home, literally within hours. US troops were ordered t backfill those positions and parts of the mission. This little war has ripples when it comes to other parts of NATO.

I think Georgia is part of Partners for Peace, or junior NATO members. Not fully entitled to the benefits of the whole of the treaty but not obliged to comply with all the treaty obligations either. As has been discussed, the Georgians may have been the agressor. This action would have been totally unacceptable as a full member of NATO. Just the same way Denmark and Canada haven't gone to guns over Hans Island up in the High Arctic.

IF Georgia was a member, this would've probably been treated like the Greek-Turkish (BOTH NATO members) conflict in Cyprus, i.e., "don't look at me. . ."
