What is your experience of the new Com-Central server.
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Greetings, All....

As some of you may have noticed, Com-Central recently had occasion to change the site over to a new server. As we're an international group with lots of different providers and systems, we'd like to get some feedback on how the site is working since the switchover. Are you finding connections faster and more reliable as before? Or not so much? Or was the changover transparent to you and you didn't even know we'd switched?

Comments welcome!

Doug

It has been more reliable for me. Many times I couldn't get on. Kept getting "Can't find server" message for hours. It almost seemed impossible to be on between 1200 and 2200.

Well,

I personally haven't notice that much of a change. I think part is due to my computer, which is actually my Wife's. She's had it a while and it's getting old. My computer gave up the ghost last year, and considering we got it in 2001 and it was still running Window's ME I can't complain (I've been accused of being a "Luddite" from time to time Rolling Eyes ). Considering taking the plunge for a new one that will support my needs, but right now I just don't want to spend a bunch of my time learning about them. Too many conflicting reports on what systems to run or problems experienced. Another very aggravating thing is they come with all sorts of Crap programs I have no use for. For that matter so does everything else (Printers/Cameras/etc) . If I install a better carb on my car I don't need it prompting the factory to call me all the time telling me there's an improved version out there with "Magic Fingers" and "Limited Edition Graphics". Much like all computer devices do now Evil or Very Mad .

Joe, and others considering a new computer, download this program once you get it setup. You can get rid of all that extra garbage and have a clean setup.

PC Decrapifier

This works well for me and a number of computer techs recommend it.

I found an even better solution. The last two laptops I bought (one for GI son, one for Wife) I bought through the Dell Small Business Site. At the time 9back in May) they still offered XP as well as offering an option that did not load up all the consumer oriented trial software. Ended up with a clean desktop right out of the box I think they still have some kind of 'downgrade to XP with future option to install Vista' because so many business customers want all their machines to stay on the same OS.

Other manufactureres might offer similar 'business oriented' software loads that will have less garbage in the initial installation.

And there are always options like Fedora or Ubuntu Linux if you would like to avoid M$ altogether. but this should all be another thread away from the Poll Rolling Eyes

Wow,

Thanks TankLord, There really is a "De Crapifier" . I just used the word "Crap" because my preferred word would be too obscene. Now I know it's officially known as crap I shall hence forth use the the proper terminology.

Bob,

That sounds like the answer, I like XP and have used it at work. Maybe because that's what the Army uses. When I take the plunge I'll let you know how things turn out.

God save Ubuntu (I replaced pre-installed Vista by this version of Linux on a recently-acquired laptop..)

It's a reliable OS, but suffers of some incompatibility problems..
