M103 Heavy Tank Question
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The M103 on display at Yuma Proving Ground has a bumper number of "2/37 Armor". Is that historically accurate? A lot of times I think the bumper # is the unit of the guy who had to paint it!

Mark,

Does not make sense to me, I spent some time in 3-37 AR and never heard of them ever having any M103's. From what I recall only 33rd AR had them in W. Germany.

It may have had them, the M103 was used for a literal blink of an eye in tank terms.

Sabot,

Could be but IIRC those tanks from the 33rd were actually parceled in company/ platoon sized elements to other areas and retained their 33rd lineage. Where's Russ when you need him.

Never was to impressed with the M103. More of an abomination that was made obsolete by the 105mm M68.

Here is what I got....

M103:....200 Produced??

M103A1: 72 Leased by the US Army (??) and sent to Europe.

1958: US Army fields the 899th Tank Battalion with the M103A1 Heavy Tank. Redesignates to 2nd Heavy Tank Bn, 33rd Armor Regt.
** Composition of Unit: 4 Tank Companies, made up of 6 Platoons (3 tanks per Platoon)

The 899th Tank Bn was inactivated on 1 May 1958 in Germany; concurrently, personnel and equipment were transferred in place to the newly activated 2nd Heavy Tank Bn, 33rd Armored which was activated on the same day and assigned to USAREUR.

Hows that?

Here is a image with recorded data from the Radcliff KY, M103A1. I found some of my old files of 'useless information'.

Hmmm, wonder if that M103 will go to the Columbus, Georgia Chamber of Commerce?
