APG #4 - XM800W ARSV, T4 medium tank
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

XM800W

T4 medium tank - built by Rock Island Arsenal with an unlicensed copy of the Christie suspension

Note the chains for holding down the tracks while driving on wheels...

Closeup of the suspension

BTW, IMO the T4 is probably a good counterpoint to the old "if the US had bought Christie's design we would have had T-34s in WWII" argument. The T4 is proof that the Christie suspension doesnt inevitably lead to a T-34 tank, as are the numerous British tanks that had Christie suspensions that didnt lead to good T-34 like tanks...

As one article noted, the T-34 was good for many reasons. Ironically, the suspension wasnt really one of them...

The collection should still be available next year. Beyond that ....

Well, it's not been unlicensed copy of the Christie suspension. Ordnance Department buy current and future patent rights in 1924 for $100K, it's been biggest mistake in Christie life.

Also i not sure about T-34 if US Army buy Christie tanks. Original design of Christie tank - it's light (10-14t) AFV with track/wheel system. Mr.Christie reject tracks/wheel system in 1936, from M1936 airborne tank he use permanent tracked system. Red Army reject this system from 1940, british army from start, german army (Pz III A and Pz II D/E) too. Also Red Army have plans of replace Christie suspension to torsion suspension in 1941 (T-34M), when Germany invade USSR, KhPZ already start to build prototype, but he not been finished.

Also for US Army Christie tanks have too big price. For exampe, price of one T4 mdeium tank - it's price of two M2A2 light tanks with same armament.
