Bad Idea?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

How smart is it to put "FLAMMABLE" labels on Jerry cans? A sniper with some tracers could probably take that vehicle out pretty easy.

Doesn't surprise me since it looks like Korea to me,

Half way through my last tour there we had to start attaching the orange ammo placards to our tanks because of the service rounds we carried.

What do you expect in this PC world. When you buy a lighter and it has a "Caution Flammable" sticker, what the hell did you buy it for in the first place for. Thanks to our litigation happy country and some really STUPID people, that's what we end up with.

At least it's Korea. I thought it was Iraq! I notice ammo trucks are all properly labeled as well as fuel trucks in Iraq. The enemy must have a 'right-to-know' granted by the EPA. Wink

Yeah,

But the tactical situation is much different than it was in 2003. Other than supply convoys that moved primarily late at night when I was last there, (mostly civilian tractor trailers similar to "Road Warrior" appearance) the majority of vehicles outside the FOB were up armored Humvee's, M117's, Tanks, Brads, and Strykers. Then you also had the Engineers and EOD with their strange vehicles doing IED sweeps. Never saw any M113's used other than gate guards (Take that Sparky Razz ).

Hi Folks!

That's the military just trying to comply with DOT requirements. I am seeing markings like that on many of the vehicles here at Ft. Bliss.

If things go bad, water and dirt are good for making a paste to cover up those stickers.

Sgt, Scouts Out!

That or a can of spray paint Smile

All our flightline AGE (Aerospace Ground Equipment) was painted nice dull OD green but had reflective markings on every corner. As a young troop I asked one time if that wasn't self defeating. My shop chief said that there used to be more equipment damaged every year by being run into at night on the flightline than he had seen destroyed on the flightlines in Vietnam by rocket and morter attacks. He also said we had a good supply of cans of spray paint in our bench stock to be deployed wherever we went. His comment was 'They may not look pretty but we can cover all that reflective tape as fast as we pull the equipment off the airplanes'

Same thing went for the reflective tape we had on our fieldjackets (front, back and sleeve cuffs). I thought about that years later when the first death in Operation Desert Shield made the news. It was an AF Staff Sergeant who got out of a truck at night on the flightline and got run over because the driver didn't see him

very interesting...

reflective tape, I know I used it. I was glad to have been highly visible. Never had to worry about snipers... (off topic on an off the topic, has a carrier ever been sniped at???)

Almost everyone of us carried some type of knife all the time. Standing thought was the flight to wherever would give us plenty of time to cut off the reflective tape and the unsubdued stripes and unit patches we had on our fatigues at the time

In Korea, there were a number of tragic events over a short period of time.

One of the situations was a flash fire caused by the combustion of several cans of propane, within the turret of a tank. a couple of mechanics were burned by the freak occurance.

The 'knee-jerk' reaction was a command directive, which still causes me to shake my head in disbelief. The directive, given hours before a required 'safety inspection' stated that,.....

"ALL FLAMMABLE ITEMS WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF THE TANK. NO EXCEPTIONS !!"

JOED, do you remember that one,......?

I remember that,

But had left before it happened. IIRC the crew had stored those small propane bottles used for cook stoves in the tank and they burst after being warmed up by the heater. In the winter of 90/91 we had a similar incident, but with spray paint cans. I was sleeping on top of my tank at the UMCP when I heard a "Boom". C65 had the turret over the rear and the crew was taking it easy when cans of spray paint stored in the turret .50 cal box blew up. The heater was blowing on them all night. Only injury was the loader with minor flash burns (He was right next to the storage box). Halon did it's job. From that day on I was convinced of the system, even though I had it accidentally go off many times in my career. Better to go off to easy than not at all. Not sure if it would've stopped propane.

I was always taught from my first day on a tank, you store POL outside, no exception. The other rule was, only store ammo in the ammo racks/compartments or nothing at all. That when when you do have to combat load, your not scrambling to locate space for personal stuff.

Was the Battalion CDR Everette at the time, sounds like something he would say.

Along with the '701' gunnery Mr. Green , the GORTEX jacket incident Shocked , and other stuff which defied logic?

Were you there when the PVS-5's were lost from the motor pool?

Oh yeah, PVS-5's, forgot about that!

As for the 1CD Patch,.....don't get me started.

Hear about a certain incident at Hohenfels with a tank hitting a UH1,.....involving a certain (then LT) Tank Commander ? Not sure of the year.

The latest issue Canadian CADPAT raincoats have sort of a shoulder cape with velcro closures and concealable glint tape. It worked as advertised for me when trudging home to the shacks after a late evening of keyboard hammering and mousing. Drivers with dirty and scratched windshields have poor visibility.
