WWII Combat Film recently uncovered
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: WWII Combat Film recently uncovered

This film was uncovered when the family of an ex combat photographer cleaned out his house after his recent death. It is ~16 minutes of what appears to be pretty raw footage. The first 10 minutes appear to be Normandy just after D-Day. The last 6 minutes or so is Gun Camera footage with the unit and pilot identified

Makes you wonder what future items will be found as more of our WWII veterans pass on.

We still have two in my family, both born Austrian, but fought on opposite sides during D-Day.

What is the vehicle at 2:48?

And notice the close brush with BIG debris from the gun camera footage at ~10:54! Shocked

Yea and he flys under it !!!

I just pulled out my 'Air Force Combat Units of World War II' I knew about the 354 Fighter Group already. It was one of the early Mustang groups in the ETO (It had them when the 4th FG was still equipped with P-47s) The funny thing is the book says they were re-equipped with P-47s from from Nov 44- Feb 45 but went back to P-51s

The 363 FG also flew Mustangs. In Sept 44 it was converted to a Recon Group flying F-5 Lightning and F-6 Mustang aircraft

Wow,

Tow vehicle looks like an M10 GMC. What it's towing beats me. Some sort of towed arty piece but I didn't see any tube in the close ups when they passed.

Its towing the carriage for the 240MM Howitzer. Its split into two loads, tube and carriage. I don't think its a M10 but I think its probably a gun towing vehicle based on the Sherman chassis....

Actually a bunch of M10s were converted to gun tractors so it probably is an M10. I don't know of any other gun tractor based on a Sherman
