old M60 photos from LIFE magazine files...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: old M60 photos from LIFE magazine files...

I am old enough to remember when the M60 was the top of the line US tank. I was surfing the LIFE archives on Google and came across some vintage shots of the days when the M60 was the new kid on the block.

Here is a group on maneuvers in September, 1960. Note the use of the cupola-side brackets that were installed for use of an M2HB (the M85 wasn't ready when the tanks were)

"An M60 driver in his "bone dome" helmet" Is that a FORSCOM insignia? I wonder why they didn't use an M-2 mounted in the cupola? Could have used one like the M114A1 had. The really bad part was the ammo was different. _________________ "TUMBLEWEED"

Beware some of the captions...anything with a turret is liable to be called an "M60 variant" Uh-huh.... ...and if that was bad, the caption here is even worse off. M60?
