1st Gulf War pics
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I believe that #9 photo is misquoted and is actually a 24th ID tank.

I was under the belief that the USMC only had M60's with reactive armor in theater during ODS.

Most of those apper in the various Concord books on the Gulf War. #9 is a 24ID tank. The so called T72s are Kuwatii Yugo built M84s.

I wonder if they got them from Knox or if Knox got them from them? I saw them down at Knox and thought maybe someone would like them..

The Marines received one battalion of M1A1 plain janes during Desert Shield. They also received some M60A3TTS tanks from the 197th Sep Inf Bde's tank battalion when they received M1A1s.

Do you have any documents or Photo's showing this?? I've been trying to track this story down for a while (among other things). I know the Air Force received a bunch of M60A3's for EOD use around that time (Runway clearing teams) but with the USMC all my info has pointed towards M60A1 ERA and M1A1's, no A3's. Every time I come across something mentioning M60A3 in USMC use it turns out to be a typo that should've read M60A1. The 2-69 AR story makes it more plausible since they transitioned to M1A1's in Saudi Arabia but I can't lock it down. I personally don't think it happened but not willing to rule it out. Strange things happen during war time.

There's a retired Marine E-8 by the name of Mike Mummey that was there. From what he told me, they got them, but didn't use them in combat. Think they used them for spare parts more than anything. He use to post quite a bit on Missing-Lynx.

I Knew "Gunny Mummy" ,

That's what he was known as at Knox when he was a small group instructor for Armor Officer Basic (AOB) in 2/16 CAV.

The spare parts scenario makes much more sense, and was what I had heard. The story was they still were Army tanks but were made available for cannibalization. I think this is partially how the story about the M60A3 being used in combat by the Marines got it's legs. Initially it was just mis-ID by some reporters and or folks not familiar with the M60 series. I'd just like to know conclusively one way or the other.

I'll see if I can dig up Mumbo's e-mail and try to get him in touch with you. Yeah, once you meet him, he's kind of hard to forget.

#7 also #41 is on the main road Northwest out of Kuwait City almost at the top of the Mutla Pass. I recognize the lattice work comms tower. Visited there on Easter Sunday 1991, and found a mag, a clip on cheek rest and 2 English language manuals for an Dragonov sniper rifle. No rifle, just parts.
