Camp Roberts #2: M7B2 Priest & M41 Walker Bulldog
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

M7B2 Priest

M41 Walker Bulldog - formerly at the Presidio of San Francisco

Looks like it might be SN 646?

If the M7B2 R/N is correct that is S/N 4509. Never can be certain with paint though.

It's unknown if that's S/N 646 or 641. Need to find an M41 or M42 and compare the mod plate S/Ns with the internal data plate S/N.

What are all of the other numbers under the SN? MWO's?

Kurt,
I was going by the example of the M42 Duster (same chassis afterall) mod plates at Camp Robinson, Little Rock AR from a previous thread. The mod plates look the same to me, and in that example the first number on top left was the SN...

Neil,

I thought we still hadn't deciphered which was the SN yet from what I remember. I wish I had checked the rear of the M42 I seen with Roy at Fort Bliss in 2007. It was the one located at building 2920. We had access to the inside and I took a picture of the rebuild data plate with SN. Didn't know of those rear plates then. The original data plate was missing but the SN was stamped in the hull behind it much like the M114's are.

Rebuild data plate

What is frustrating is that the ones where people have gotten inside have had the the same number in both places on the mod plate.

The numbers relate to modifications but aren't apparently the MWO numbers. There were MWOs in the G-251 series for the vehicle, C-82 series for the gun and mount, F-359 for the ballistic drive, and so on for other pieces of the fire control and sighting systems. Just stamping "12" wouldn't tell you which of the W12 MWOs was incorporated.

They must have had a master list.

Seems like whenever I see a "Priest" they are 'M7B2'. Were there any massed produced versions other than the B2?

Certainly... The B1 variant. The howitzer sits lower in the B1 variant... Will post a pic when I get a chance - but I'm sure someone can beat me to it Wink

Post subject: M7 versions

I'd say that the M7B2 was perhaps the next-to-smallest variant quantity (after the M7J1)! There were 3490 M7s and 826 M7B1s made. As far as I know all the M7B2s were made from M7B1s (Ford engined), and there are quite a few M7B1s around, so therefore the total number of M7B2s must be less than 826.

Thanks. That answered my question. There is a difference!

Any sign of a T-34/85 here at Camp Roberts?

Thanks in advance,
Lesley
