Early Patton Museum pics
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Went to Knox yesterday and Don's pics a few topics back of early Patton Museum led me to looking for some more, here is what I found and as usual its not for 56K folks, sorry. But they are nice pics, this might take 2 minutes to load.

Thanks for the pics!

Are all those vehicles accounted for, aside from the afore-discussed StuG/SPW?

I remember when I first visited the Patton Museum back in 1975. It was my first experience at seeing German armor "in the flesh". I remember the Wespe, the SdKFZ 234/4 armored car, the Marder (II?) and a couple of Hummels, and the StuH. A bunch of the German stuff got "repatriated" to Germany. As a US armor researcher I am glad to see the large amount of US equipment keeps growing. I'm hoping that most of the collection stays together, even if it ends up in Georgia.

Neil as best as I have been able to figure out, these are the vehicles that 'went away' many years ago.

Given away (on loan??)
- Stug III
- Hummel
- 251 (pioneer)

Range targets on Ft Knox
- StuG III
- 251/9
- Bergpanther

Don

Great pics!

Dontos, there was definitely a Hummel that went to Munster (#3 here):

and a StuG from APG that went on to Munster via FK (#12 here):

Trevor
the StuG III (Unique ID: #136) has been in storage many years. It is currently kept indoors (thankfully)at Richardson MP. I took this photo of it in Nov 2002 when we moved it.

Nice to know the 'give aways' have been well kept up.

I would love to 'rummage' around to see the status of the 'Range Targets' if they still exist.

Just a few notes of your 4 March photo addition:

Photo #6 was taken in 1972. Sorta mixed into the early photos. The Ontos (pictured next to the M56 Scorpion!?) was donated to the Museum by the USMC in 1971.

Photo #13 of the StuG is one of the vehicles no longer in the collection.

Photo #20 of the 251/9 without front wheels, is believed to be one of the 'Range Target' vehicles. Perhaps hiding in the bushes somewhere on post !!?? Shocked

Dontos, could I add that information and picture to the website (with credit of course)? I'm gradually putting together a page of updates to the original information:

Thats fine. Always glad to help clear up the 'murky' details.

The Ft Knox 'shell game' of 'what is where' is nearly a full time job. I'm just trying to keep a handle on my own ability to keep up to date. My goal is to try and 'de-conflict' any conflicting data or information.

After all, the mission of the Museum (and the volunteers) is to 'Tell The Story'. My own personal motivation is to make sure 'The Story' is as accurate as possible.
