Armored Ghosts of Fort Knox
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

That's the one I'm talking about.

I remember when the tracks ran through that circle.

That building is "One Stop" as of last August. Spent my last day in the Army in there. Gave me a flag and DD-214 along with a retired sticker and lapel pin. Only thing I didn't get was a "Gold Watch" Laughing

Joe,

I mean the ancient past. When I was there. I think I bought a Tamiya Pz.IV kit there....and a pair of tanker boots (which I still have, got a picture of my feet in 'em driving an M1 Abrams, though I'm in blue jeans Laughing )

I've been cross-taining. My feet are on the pedals, needless to say there isn't much room in this tank.

The really interesting fact is the engine has been replaced with a flat-head 4cyl engine (WWII Jeep?). The 3ton was used by the Ft Knox commanders for 'pass & review' ceremonies many years ago. The engine has been installed in the machine gunners position. immediately behind the MG is the radiator and then the engine. The rear compartment is empty except for the 'modern' final drive and transmission. It has seen a considerable amount of 'reengineering' to fit the 'modern' drive train & power plant.

This two man tank, has been converted to a One Man tank.

Don

Well they ran the engine of Aberdeens 3ton on Veterns Day. They are hoping to be able to run it around at the museum on Memorial Day. With the original engine

Neil,

About those SN/RN's I posted in italics, I was scratching my head on where I got them from and finally figured it out. They are from the official Patton Museum web site Patton Museum.

Yep, that's exactly where I got that info from too... Question is do match up to other SN/RNs on the list...

Well,

There's only one M60, so somewhere there's a disconnect. Don's SN/RN for that tank really doesn't add up. Shouldn't be above SN 2009, RN should look like 9B----.

The other two are either hidden somewhere or may have been given away since last checked. Who knows.

Maybe they are hidden in some super secret location even Don doesn't know about Laughing

Stithton Circle wasn't always that way. Used to be one of the T-29 or T-30 heavies there with a couple of other tanks, kept nice and tidy. And lots of traffic, formerly a vibrant area. Sad what it's like now, really.

I'm gradually updating current static displays around Post.

Here is one of the most recent changes.

Enjoy
Don

Hey Don,
What building is this Stuart located at? Its a new one to me... Next dangerous question - where did it come from? I had 3 M5A1 Stuarts listed in storage - SNs 3063, 3903, & 8182...

BTW, I'm now including links to notable photo galleries or individual pics (sometimes a Google Streetview shot) in the AFV Register listings...

Don, or anyone else, I could use photo links (online only - but posted on here works!) for the following static display vehicles at Knox:

Patton Museum
M4A3E8 Sherman Easy Eight (SN 61079 or 61909) - never seen a picture of the "new" M4A3E8 inside the museum & cant seem to find one...

Bullion Gate
M2 Bradley
M24 Chaffee

Gaffney Hall
M4A3E8 Sherman Easy Eight (SN 61203, RN 30114225)

Copple Center
M59
M60A1 RISE (SN 9349)

Post Exchange
M4A3E8 Sherman Easy Eight (SN 15266; “Thunderbolt VII”)

Cherry Hall
M59 (RN 12A340)

Ireland Army Community Hospital
M59 in ambulance colors - could swear I had seen a picture of this...

Skidgell Hall
M60A1 RISE (SN 3078, RN 9B7257)

MATES
M60A3 (SN 6663, AAD rebuild SN 2278A)

Wilson Road Gate
M551 Sheridan

Thanks!

Neil
