Yep! I quit Smokin'! Laughing

Started early last week, scaled down to one smoke every 2 hours for about 3 days, then on Thursday night I had my last and quit cold turkey. Since the first 72 hours are the worst, that left Friday as the one work day to deal with, then I could lock myself in the basement in a straightjacket for the weekend and howl at the moon, and by Monday I had all (or most) of the physical side effects over with.

So today was day 6 and I'm well over the hump! Just gotta keep the mental discipline now. Even had some good stress challenges today and made it through just fine. Kinda cool to face down the events that tend to trigger the desire and come out on top.

Wish I'd done it sooner but you gotta do it when you're ready and you're minds made up. Feels good!

Thanks gents!

Today makes it a full week...getting easier by the day. Unfortunately, food tastes better (kinda....some of it like chocolate, is strangely overly salty now), so I've gained back about half the weight I lost this last summer out of nervous snacking. Kinda knew that would happen tho...and spring is around the corner, which means yardwork, more exercise, all that good stuff....

You can come back over for a visit now.

Well that's good to hear bud because later this year, around the fall, there's a test going on in your neck of the woods that I'm supposed to be involved with.....wouldn't wanna miss ya!

Rolling Eyes now who's gonna sneak smoke breaks with me in Ascouts aircraft?
Sorry Ascout, we didn't wanna stink up our own planes. That whole story about it just being the smell from the kerosene heaters in the hangar was a fib.

Congrats Bud proud of ya and most likely, as of next month, I'll have to join ya. Yep been hearing smokes will go up to 7 bucks a pack in the beautiful (broke) state of California. Been feeling the need to quit myself so besides my health, I guess the new $200 a month cost should be plenty of incentive to quit.

Would just leave me more money for Beer. Wink

good job stoop!...I too have quit and succeeded...3 times now and the final #4 starts again this coming weekend....the first time I quit it was for a year, I even came to hate the smell. The next time was for about 8 months and the last time was for about 2 months......I know I can do it but I let the weakness take over and then I fold like a cheap tent!...The best I can tell ya' is even after a year and your having a beer with the boys and figure ..."ah what the hell, I'm quit I can handle just one for old times sake". That has been my downfall every time. If you even have 1 smoke for any reason, it will be your demise! guaranteed!!!

You are right by saying your over the hump!,,,it only gets easier after the third day I found, I also used non-smoking aids.....nicorette patches are best and the nicorette inhaler works pretty slick too.....sounds like your over that stage though so Congrats to you!.......
I will use this as aditional drive to help me again and for good...I'm getting too old to punish my body like this!

Thanks Dale!

Well as an update I'm now 6 weeks along and smoke-free, well over the hump for sure and the payoffs are already showing up. Gained about 15 pounds though, so the weight I took off last summer is now coming back....can't win either way can ya?!!! Laughing

Good luck fr8ycat and Hoppa. The advice I read this time around said doing it cold turkey without any aids was the way to go, turns out people who do it that way have the highest long-term success rate, but y'know, do whatever works for ya!

It's true that having just "that one for old times sake" is all it takes to regress, even after years. Good advice. 3 basic things that really did the trcik for me this time are:

1) Lots of good reading here: whyquit.com/

2) Did some "behavioral modification": I wore a large rubber band around my wrist starting about 2-3 weeks before I actually quit. When I wanted a smoke, AND/or when I lit on up, I stretched the rubber band out (on the soft, sensitive palm-side of my wrist) and SNAPPED myself REAL GOOD with it...OUCH!!!!! Started to associate smoking with pain. Had to switch wrists around every day or two as they got raw and red from that. But, it worked to stop associating so much pleasure and relief from the habit, and forced my mind to think of other ways to look for a fix.

3) Someone to focus on: You can't quit for anyone but yourself, because you'll hold a grudge against someone if you do quit for them (like if you quit for your wife, etc...). Gotta do it for yourself only. But then again I'm the kind of person that needs someone to focus my anger at. My family is strangely very grudge-oriented, what can I say. So I decided that I'd be quitting for this fat POS corksoacker on the right in this picture:

That's Mike Szymanczyk, CEO of Philip Morris USA. I've given way too much of my money, time and health so that fat bastid could line his pockets, and I'm pretty sure he's smart enough to not smoke....so when I needed to be PO'd at someone or something, I just thought of him, and it worked. Sad to say, but hey if I can outlive him and dance on his grave, it'll be worth it. Wink

Just dance?! PM me for some other action verbs you might want to consider. Wink

I'll hold your coat or umbrella, or whatever, if you're encumbered when the time comes....even bring "baby wipes" if you're really inclined to "get down".

LMAO about the baby wipes,I quit Dec.31 93,did the cold turkey white knuckle thing same as you but i avoided the weight gain by restricting my perpetual snacking to sunflower and pumkin seeds,I'm just too lazy and slow to shell enough of them to put the pounds on.
