M4A3E2 Jumbo Assault tank
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

To think this was top secret at the time,

Imagine what they did/ are doing with tanks/AFV's since then at Aberdeen.

At the Armor Board and Armor School, this was known as "tryin' to blow some s*** up. I recall examining scores of penetrations, if not hundreds, wherein the typical diameter of the hole (that bit that would pass light) ranged from the size of a dime, up to a quarter. Some were just big enough to push a pencil through, but you knew very well that the effect would be unsurvivable most of the time. Very sobering.

The public gets all horney when they see the big impacts and explosions with oodles of flame...looks impressive on film, especially in slo-mo. The crews are impressed with those holes the size of a No. 2 pencil that intrudes into their compartment (with all it's attendant ammo) after the fact. I remain amazed at how small the penetrations need be to effectively render an MBT both useless and lifeless.

Like the saying goes, I'd rather be missed with a .45 than hit by a .22.

And stealth is even better....

Better not to be seen to avoid being shot at.

But Tanks and Stealth are sorta oxy-moronic.

Back to the top with some interesting information to add in the life of the 'mythical' JUMBO.

Neil
The T33 at APG was one of 3 converted M4A3E2 JUMBOs tested in 1948. I found documentation showing the 3 vehicles (SN 50343, 50414, & 50424

The APG T33 was RN 3083011 (SN 50414)of which I discovered numerous photos during the 1948 time frame.

Additionally I found numerous photos of the AEB, Ft Knox tested the T33 which was RN 3083021 (SN 50424)

No clue at this time where # 3 went to, but hugely successful digging out info on 2 of 3 converted JUMBOS.

Interesting stuff, but unfortunately didn't have the time to scan any 'new' photos. Hope to get those and more in the next few days.

Again, great stuff Don, keep it coming.
JG300-Ascout-- it helps that you can see the .45 coming...
you are absolutely correct, it only takes a small hole to allow that molten hot surface of the sun to jet thru and make for a very unhappy day...
dont know all the technical terms but the smaller the hole the more concentrated that jet stream will be and all that... and if I am not mistaken it will flare out/expand on the opposite side, very nasty, it is bad luck to talk about this?
make any correction if I have been incorrect
