Fort Lewis #1: Museum M551 Sheridan, M728
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

M551 Sheridan - looks like its SN 12, RN 13C507. But I suspect this is a former 2nd ACR Museum Sheridan? Mods are too recent to have served with 2-1 Cavalry right?

Kinda blurry, but pretty sure it says 12?

M728 - SN 75

Sure is, remarkably complete and in remarkable condition. Even the water barrier covers are apparently intact (not rotted, look serviceable).

BTW, Joe,
There are another six M728s in a boneyard near the Range Control, along with a bunch of M901s. Unfortunately, they were behind a fence & locked...

My guess would be that this came from the 82nd AB. Because it has recent mods and because it lacks the mine protection kit.

When did the 2nd ACR give up their Sheridans? Was it before the mods?

I'm pretty sure all of the 2nd ACR Sheridans would have had mine kits. I believe the 82nd AB left them off because of the added weight. This Sheridan also has the slave receptacle outside which I think would date it well after the 2nd ACR had them. This one also has a new style headlight guard that I've only seen on 82AB Sheridans. This is an M551A1.

Neil, any chance I could add your many and varied Fort Lewis photo's to the PreservedTanks.com entry?

Hi,

Trevor...this may be useful:

M551A1 - Ft. Lewis, WA. Located at the (temporarily closed) Post Museum, outside. I'm going to call her "The Tattooed Lady" because of all the markings on her. I've never seen more stamped-in numbers on any vehicle, however her S/N appears to be 12.

Registration number, I suspect:

No idea what these are. Never seen them on any other Sheridan. "27" upper left, "694" underneath that, "TOI" on upper right, and an "8" below that. These are located on the upper edge of the right rear slope, next to the engine access hatch. Probably mean nothing, but maybe... Wink

Enjoy!

Chuck
