I dont know why I am asking you all but I have a sympathy letter in the family collection that is signed by Douglas MacArthur.
Would it have really been signed by him? With as many of these letters as he would have had to send out I would think that someone on staff would have signed these types of letters in his name...
Among the official sympathy letters is one from Sec of War Henry Stimson...

I would think that it is more likely a 'rubber stamp' signature or an original signature and less likely an aid doing the signing.

Having someone else sign such letters is a bit tasteless and shows lack of compassion, in 'my book'.

There are thousands of these letters out there, it isnt rare, but unfortunately I happen to have one received by my aunt. How horrible for her, very young and in love. All of these letters were to be removed from the family history, but...

Well then I am going to believe it is the real deal. It isnt a stamp, you can see the ink bleed and the movement and changes in the flow, etc.
MacArthur and Stimson both signed, Marshall did not. To think that as busy as they were, having truly read it or not, General MacArthur signed it.
The burden of command, he signed thousands of such letters, to have read the names and carried them with him, man... I respect the man even more. That hand also signed the documents that ended the war and brought us into the atomic age...
