Sherman flamethrower - which exact model?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hello guys,

I need to identify this Sherman Flamethrower. It was on the old Mile of Tanks at Aberdeen.
Where is it located now?

I believe the model is an M4A1 POA-CWS-H5. I don't know where it's located now, though I've heard there's one at Fort Leonard Wood.

Trevor,

I thought that the POA-CWS-H5 had an HVSS suspension and were constructed from M4A3 hulls...

I believe the model number is for the weapon, so it can be mounted on different hulls. This is the reference I found:

I agree, I believe its the one at the Chemical Corps Museum at Fort Leonard Wood. The other two surviving CWS-POA-H5 Shermans are are Twentynine Palms and Jacksonville NC (recovered from Camp Lejeune).

BTW, Joe DeMarco passed on this picture to me some time ago of the Sherman flamethrower tanks at the Chemical Corps Museum display when it was at Edgewood Arsenal in October 1972 (then a separate facility from APG, since absorbed).

Not sure if thats before or after the picture of the CWS-POA-H5 Sherman at the Ordnance Museum above.

That flamethrower Sherman was at APG when I first visited in July 1977

Gallery showing the recovery of the Sherman Flame at Camp Lejeune (thanks to "Sander D" for having found the gallery). This tank is the one which is now at Jacksonville.
Anyone knows when it was recovered? It would help to date the photos.

I seem to remember that recovery back in 2003 or 2004. I have a few friends who were associated with the discovery & recovery.

The Ranges at Camp Lejeune seem to have several such treasures buried or simply forgotten on old ranges.

BTW, I was considering a trip down to eastern NC over the weekend and made some phone calls to what was called the "Marine Corps Museum of the Carolinas" (or something like that) and is now called the "Museum of the Marine" (either way the museum isnt actually open). These are the guys that had a POA-CWS-H5 Sherman and an Ontos...

They still have the Ontos, but I am told that the POA-CWS-H5 was given to Headquarters Marine Corps and is now at Quantico... I assume for the Museum there... I visited the museum a few weeks ago, but there was nothing new to report - which still disappoints me since I know that they have a very small fraction of what they have on display (particularly compared to the old Air-Ground Museum that was at Quantico).

....and an Ontos...

They still have the Ontos, ...

Neil

Neil

I know that the Ontos is privately owned, but on loan/donated to the Museum. It was cobbled together from a couple of ex-range 'PIGS' and a former forestry service Ontos. It has been automotively operational 'fairly recently', but not for several years.

Im not sure if the 'USMC Museum of the Carolinas' ever really got off the ground, due to the Quantico Museum's priority need. This is really dated information so I could be wrong, but this is what I was lead to believe, sometime ago.

I wonder if that was the Ontos that was being put together at the old Quantico museum when I was stationed there in 94-95. Used to volunteer my free time helping on a couple of the aircraft restorations and I remember a couple of guys working on an Ontos in the back of one of the storage areas. Seem to remember they were also working on a Mule at the same time.

This is an older photo of the Ontos at the USMC Museum of the Carolinas.

The Ontos you saw was most likely was this one,....

which is the same as is on display in the new museum.
