Nice,

Early Anniston Rebuild with "J" stowage bracket and interupter for wind sensor. Really surprised they didn't remove the TTS. Part of the De-mil process.

Did the M60A1 and the M60A2 share the same commander's turret/cupola? Was the same fording snorkel used on the M48 the same on the M60?

This sudden interest is all because of the AN/VSS-1 Searchlight I've been reading up on. I'm thinking of getting this M60 at www.chunwai-model.com/...l&owen2=B1 someday and hopefully scratch building the turret for the A2. What would that be more accurately called ... the M60A1E1?

Sorry for all the questions. Razz

Jeff,

First question, no. Totally different cupola. Like comparing a Toaster to a microwave, that much more gizmos involved.

Second question. If you use an M60, not an A1 hull, yes, would be called M60A1E1. Wouldn't have the CBSS bulge in the back either. But you'd be limited as to what markings to use, since none ever saw service, just test and pilot models.

BTW, M60A2 used AN/VSS-2, but it's identicle externally so modeling it wouldn't be any different than the VSS-1.

I tried the link, it didn't work for me Sad .

Thanks Joe for your reply. I just received an M60 book today from Osprey which will be the first of many and your answers made a big difference in understanding.

Here's a working link to the 1/16th M60:

www.chunwai-model.com/...l&owen2=B1

Not cheap but what is?

Jeff,

The kit is of an A1 from what I can tell, but looks like they had to take some liberties with the suspension in order to make it functional. So you could just as easily make an A2 if your willing to scrap built the rear CBSS bulge. This would give you at least 7 different battalions you could model, six of whom were in West Germany. That is unless you want to model Doug's unit or the training regiment at Knox. That would add two more.

Jeff - please take no offence, but from a look at that link I think I would question the quality of their product. I don't just mean the gaps and joins, but the hull and turret shape just appear wrong to me (as Joe alluded indirectly). Also, it doesn't seem right they way they've done the mantlet as part of the turret, and with a join through it. I would question whether they have used scale plans or dimension at all.

(Please don't shoot the messenger! It's just I suspect it could be very frustrating to get it looking good).

Hey Trevor! Hey no offence at all buddy, I know at least that much. Laughing I just know that this is the only working M60 platform available and even though either an M60 or the A1 would be prefect for me, I want to replace the turret (and it is pretty bad looking) and scratch build my own for the A2.

Have you guys clicked forward to the following pages (next at the bottom of the pictures will get you there) to see the mantlet added? I don't know why they allowed photos of it with out the gun shield in place and track pads on only one side, but hey ... I guess they just wanted to show it in various stages.

There's a builder taking their M1A2 and going through replacing all the screws and pretty much making it more accurate so the thought occurred to me to build the A2 which would be cheaper than my other passion, the M551. So, with money cooperating with me I hope to get this kit by the end of the year and start this project. With what I can do and the resources available I do hope to pull it off.

But thanks for pointing that out! All too often people bite their tongue and never say a thing but I do appreciate the pointers. It will be fun.

I guess I should have been more direct,

But this forum we are more like Gentlemen gathered in an old study politely discussing AFV subjects, so being subtle is generally the order of the day. (Unlike another I occasionally lurk on where whoever screams the loudest is correct and there is no room for intelligent discussion Rolling Eyes )

Thank you Trevor for being more direct and my apologies to you Jeff for not being so.

That said,

You would figure when producing a kit of that scale it would be easier to get the details correct. Appears they used an Israeli M60A1 as a reference looking at the low profile cupola. If you decide to tackle this project let me know, I have plenty of photographs and data that could help you with your A2 turret and hull inaccuracies, depending on how detailed you want to get.

A few years back I entertained the thought of building a large scale M60 R/C model a few times, even going as far as getting an old electric wheel chair for the motors and controls, but time (too many other projects) and lack of modeling skills are the realities that stop me.

No problem at all Joe and thanks! I don't live and die by counting rivets, just wanted a few thoughts straightened out before attempting this. I realize it is what it is and sacrifices will be made, especially since they are working with metal.

If I do get it most of that will disappear.

Ok, great - I just wasn't sure whether to say something or not! Sounds like you know just what you're getting in to.
