Canadian AFVs and other equipment in the news
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

There has been some eye-opening testimony by LGen Leslie at a Senate committee meeting. Even though Afghansistan is the CF's main effort overseas, the troops are blowing, burning, breaking and otherwise using up the LAVIII, Bison and Coyote fleet at an unsustainable rate. This is on top of a very aggressive repat' airlift for third line rebuilding. The Chief of the Land Staff said that only 30% of many fleets are serviceable at any time. This is on top of a hollowed out Army that is losing its sergeants and warrants, captains and majors. The guys (me included) are tired and ready for their pensions.

This echos the situation in the Air Force. About 60% of the first line fighters are available, which actually isn't a bad number. But we're only flying them as air interceptors. Something like 10 of the 28 or 30 shipborne helicopters are airworthy. Most of the Herc are grounded for parts. The only bright sparks (and it was about friggin" time) the tactical helicopter fleet is actually in the fight in AFG escorting our 6 new used Chinooks, and our C17s are really taking up the slack for the other strategic airlifters.

The navy is not doing much better either. We'll hear their tale of woe soon enough.
